Spell Resistance and beneficial spells

Rules Questions

Grand Lodge

For the first time in probably 4 years I have started a game where a character has spell resistance. One of my players has requested to play a drow for my CoT AP.

I'm assuming that for a character with spell resistance to receive the effects of a beneficial spell (such as cure light wounds) from another party member, they must first spend a standard action to lower their spell resistance or risk it failing due to a failed caster check.

Here is the appropriate lines from the rules text:

A creature can voluntarily lower its spell resistance. Doing so is a standard action that does not provoke an attack of opportunity. Once a creature lowers its resistance, it remains down until the creature's next turn. At the beginning of the creature's next turn, the creature's spell resistance automatically returns unless the creature intentionally keeps it down (also a standard action that does not provoke an attack of opportunity).

Hope that helps!

In short, yes.

from page 217 under Spell Resistance...

"The terms “object” and “harmless” mean the same thing
for spell resistance as they do for saving throws. A creature
with spell resistance must voluntarily lower the resistance
(a standard action) in order to be affected by such spells
without forcing the caster to make a caster level check."

I think in 3.5 lowering resisance could be done as a free action, but the resistance remained "down" for 1 round (until the character's next turn). It made healing and buffing them in combat interesting.

Edit: Ninja'd and corrected.

Liberty's Edge

If you look at the WotC 3.5 book on drow(can't quite think of the name of it now) it had a number of drow related feats in it, and one of them was pretty nice for spell resistance. It let you drop it much more efficiently for beneficial spells. Its been a long time since I read it though and I don't have it available here, so hopefully someone out there can look it up for you and give you the exact details.

Edit: Nevermind, quick lookup on their example page- WotC site here

Info they give about it:

Name: Reactive Resistance
Prerequisites: Spell resistance
Summary: Lower SR as immediate action
