Our Kingmaker game had another casualty last night. Our Gnome Rogue is no more after being murdered by a Daemon. This was after we for some odd reason decided to split the party which is obviously never a good idea and he came across a summoning circle. He did what was only logical and broke the circle causing the Daemon to appear and attack him. He made a new character, a magus, and we continued on our adventure.

Never split the party!!
Movies:
The Trotsky Amusing high school rebellion movie that is totally up my alley. Most movies get leftist rhetoric wrong, but this one did a pretty good job up. Also, Trotsky was never named Leon Bronstein, his given name was Lev Davidovich Bronstein, but I digress. Solid B. I'll throw in a + for all the commie shiznit.
Tipping Point: The End of Oil Mmmm, tar sands is bad, kay? Blame Canada! This movie was okay. It made me cry a couple of times. I'll give it a B and throw in a - because of James Cameron and footage from Avatar.

Hey, DA. Check out Brick. Film noir meets high school drama, with Joseph Gordon Levitt. Surprisingly good, actually.

Long ago, KvdK there were some posters who wanted to hang out in the FAWTL threads but were, um, shall we say, divisive.
Well, they were driven out of FAWTL with pitchforks and torches and I went with them because, of course, I love trolls and we staked a claim here in Celestial Healer's old thread and took it over.
But then, alas, Gark and Mama Kelsey, have drawn back on their Messageboards presence and I, as we all know, prefer arguing and trolling to being social.
I think that's pretty much it.

So, there's not much point in grading this. I read all the way up to the last couple of chapters and then [bubble bubble bubble]d and then popped the DVD in.
I have no idea what someone who hadn't just read the book would think, but I bawled like a baby when

I read a fun article (that I'm too lazy to go find now) about the appeal of violence of films that specifically examined the film adaptation of The Hunger Games. I liked the thought-provoking premise:
In the movie, we cheer in support of these teenagers who are being forced to fight to the death to entertain affluent, amoral spectators. The movie is full of graphic violence of these kids killing each other, but we focus our hatred on the fictional characters watching this fictional bloodsport.
So, how effective would the movie be if all the gladiator-style violence took place off-screen? If the movie was REALLY about condemning the spectator sport, we should not need to see the violence in the arena, but in reality, nobody would watch that film. We watch it for the violence and feel good about it because we can spend the whole time condemning the spectators in the Capital.
Is the only difference between us and the Romans the fact that we can simulate the violence so that no one actually dies?
These are the questions I will think about while I watch these kids eviscerate each other with large blades. :)

Hmm. That's interesting, but imho, both in the book and in the movie, most of the violence and child-eviscerating takes place off-screen.
I think there was probably less than 20 minutes of violence in a film that's roughly 2 and 1/2 hours.
The big kill-off scene at the beginning of the games is shot all MTV-style with camera jumps (I am forgetting my cinephile terminology) every three seconds or so which I thought was a pretty effective way of suggesting tons of violence without actually showing it.
But then again, of course, it's marketed for a teen audience.
Which leads me to the Don Juan part of this post: I was relieved when I looked on-line that Ms. Lawrence is 22 and not underage like her character in the novel. Made me feel like less of a creepy pedophile when she was being all hawt and stuff.

Did you see her in Winter's Bone? Difficult, creepy movie to watch, but very good.
Quick google search later:
No, I haven't, but after I looked it up I remember people talking about it a while back.
For some reason, we watch a lot of DVDs made by Magnet up here and we've seen this trailer a million times.
I think that's going to be my next Netflix delivery.

I didn't notice while watching it, but I did notice when looking her up to see if I was a sicko.
I liked X-Men: First Class the most out of all the X-Men flicks. Probably because of the commie angle.
Hunger Games spoiler:
After some time to think about it, though, I don't know how anyone who hasn't read the books could enjoy the movie. Especially once the Games start, the other tributes come and go so quickly the viewer's just like, hmmm? another one dead? ho hum. Also, it's so disappointing that whole chapters of the book about her healing, or being dehydrated, or nursing, or being nursed, fly by in a scene change.
But I guess that's just the whole book-to-movie thing. Putting down the book and immediately watching it with everything so fresh in my head was pretty awesome though. I really liked the book.

I put it in the same box I put D&D/PF. For many of us, we enjoy it because it's fictional - because we can have this disturbing/gruesome/violent stuff happen but in the end no one gets hurt.
It's when that crosses over to reality and you're still enjoying it that you've got to worry about something being loose upstairs, IMO.

CA- Love Walking Dead it is completely the bomb can't wait for it to return in a few months. That and Game of Thrones (which was amazing). Though I will have to say Breaking Bad is just as good just different.
Not sure about Total Con yet need to talk with wife, but good thing is we both have cars now so it is more likely I will show up.
BT- I have been wanting to run in or run Serpent Skull really liked the theme of that one. I love jungles and the whole jungle theme and the villians in that Adventure path.
Aeglos - How are things on your side of the Atlantic ? Doing well here and constantly kicking stuff.

So, last year, I think it was, the film Genevieve appeared on Netflix and I was like, yeah, mofo! I've been trying to see this one for a while, so I put it in my queue and it got all the way to #1 and then, all of a sudden, it disappeared from Netflix's inventory.
Anyway, I got it the other day and watched it and IT WOULDN'T PLAY THE ENDING!!! WTF?!?
Fortunately, there's always Youtube.
I haven't watched the link yet, but I think it's safe to give it a B+.
