Possibly, as the act of hitting someone is intimidation but it can also provoke anger or push fear far enough that the person lashes out or runs away. I'd roll a second intimidate check to see if the intimidation holds. If it doesn't then have the NPC act out as I mentioned but in a way that seems appropriate. If the roll succeeds the NPC is still cowed with the duration lasting a little longer as the new intimidate would only extend the effect.

PC: I told you to get in here! <smack>
<Reroll fails>
NPC: <In a fit of rage> STOP HITTING ME! <starts attacking character>
