Why is there a dot next to my Journal thread title?

your guess is close, the dot indicates thread that you have posted in, allowing you to quickly scan to see is someone has posted after you in a thread.

All this time I've been looking at my recent posts and then just clicking on each thread to see what's gone on next...

That's why I've only ever seen it against Fayne's journal - it's the only thread of mine that (recently) consistently tops the messageboard RSS feed display.
