After noticing the howling cease, the two watchmen set about in a state of hyper-vigilance. You stare off into the shadow, your minds conjuring up all sorts of shapes from half shaded tree branches and low lying shrubs concealed in the darkness. Several minutes pass and a couple of times you are sure that you can nearly see a wolf slinking just out of sight, but it alwasy turns out to be the firelight, "playing tricks on you." The woods is alive with nighttime sounds. Owls, vols, ground squirrels, bats, raccoons, and other night time denizens are clearly heard as the night goes on.

Virgil bellows out to his companions, "Wolves! Wolves! Two of them! One northeast, one southwest! On your feet!" Rising, he grabs an unlit end of one of the logs from the fire and hurls it at the wolf to the northeast. (Standard action)

Attack 1d20 + 2 - 4 - 4 ⇒ (20) + 2 - 4 - 4 = 14
Damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
I figured a log would do damage as a club, plus 1 point for being on fire.

Note to self: Purchase a ranged weapon.

After throwing the flaming log, Virgil steps to the middle of the circle of tents, "Back to back, comrades. The last thing we need is to be outmaneuvered." His eyes narrow and his voice drops, "The Creeper Embraces the Oak." He adopts a slow, circling stance. His blade goes from high to low and back to constantly offer a new threat and to guard against others.

The rest is just fluff.

Male Dwarf Ranger 1

Thorvin stands straight up as Virgil shouts, and almost as quickly, draws his bow. He watches Virgil toss the log into the woods and squints to find the target as he nocks an arrow.

Virgil bellows out to his companions, "Wolves! Wolves! Two of them! One northeast, one southwest! On your feet!" The swordsman, then bends low near the fire and fishes out a seizable branch that looks both solid and is aflame at one end. He brandishes it menacingly in the direction of the wolves.

Spoiler:
You sputter awake at onset of Virgil's shouting. This counts as your move action for this round. You start round 1 prone and awake.

The fel lupines charge forward with great alacrity. Two of them rush towards Thorvin, flanking him. Meanwhile, an undetected wolf, charges headlong towards Virgil and his flaming brand. All three wolves suffer a -2 penalty to AC until the end of round from taking a partial charge.

Wolf 3 Bite vs. Virgil: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8

The first creature tears into Thorvin, grabbing him by the legs and throwing the poor dwarf upon the ground. The second animal takes advantage of the situation biting the woodsman across the shoulder. The third wolf, jumps at Virgil but misses him entirely. It rolls to it's feet and gives the warrior a cruel snarl.

The other two companions remain asleep for now.

Virgil, grabbing the burning branch is a move action, therefore, you can not also throw it on the surprise round. Thorvin, considering your new situation, I thought that drawing your bow might be inappropriate. I'll let you re-declare your move action if you'd like...

Taking stock of the chaos the camp has become, she orders Roarke to attack one of the wolves attacking Thorvin (pointing out the one between their position and Thorvin, in the hopes that he can take advantage of the wolf's distracted state) while cursing her two legs, which require her to spend so much time staggering to her feet, sickle in hand.

Its fine this time, but I must inform you that leaving a crossbow drawn back for an extended period of time (hours) is a bad idea. It will stretch the bowstring, and over time make the weapon inaccurate.

Virgil Longstreet wrote:

Brandishing, acquiring, and drawing a weapon are all basically the same thing and require either a move action, or may be performed as part of a move action if your base attack bonus is greater than zero.

Great. On round one would you like to draw your axe and attack, or provoke more attacks of opportunity by moving away, drawing your bow and firing?

Thorvin rises from the dusty grounds and his canine assailants do not hesitate as he does so.

Attack of Opportunity vs. Thorvin: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14

The wolves' jaws bear down upon Thorvin's limbs, but the dwarf's well made studded leather armor protects him from their sharp teeth. "That was a bit too close for comfort" thinks the dwarf as he pulls himself free of the creature's maws.

Virgil, sizing up his animal opponent, decides that the burning brand from the fire is having little effect on the creature. He drops it and draws his greatsword. It does not quaver however and jumps upon Virgil, covering the warrior's armor in its blood.

The wolf clambers for Virgil's throat and finds it's mark savagely ripping into the warrior's flesh and with a display of unbridled power, it throws him to the ground. The blood of the wolf and the blood of the man mingling to soil the ground beneath them.

Meanwhile, the two wolves work in unison against Throvin one feinting while the other attacks. The first attempt to down the dwarf is fruitless as the cunning warrior dodges the wolf's assault. The second wolf, however, finds purchase in the dwarf's backside giving him an annoying injury on the rump.

Lianth awakes from her slumber to witness the mayhem all around her. As she stands, she orders Rourke to attack the nearest wolf attacking Thorvin. The loyal companion leaps forth, is dodged by it's target but manages to defensively flank the opponent, giving the dwarf a better chance to down the opponent.

Awakened by all the action, Carrion retrieves his loaded crossbow and stands taking aim at his assailants.

I'm still waiting to see if Throvin would like to take a melee attack with his axe (flanking bonuses apply) or would like to move away from melee and attack with his bow (provokes attacks of opportunity). Virgil executes, Arc of the Moon, a simple slash beginning at midbody level and arcing to cleave clean through the wolf's shaggy neck sending its disembodied head rolling into the fire. He then moves his blade back into a guarded stance.

With a leap the first wolf sinks it's teeth into Thorvin's side drawing blood from yet another set of fresh bite marks. The second wolf, has less luck, however as it fails to pierce the dwarf's leather armor. After the barrage, the sturdy dwarf remains upon his feet.

Lianth, standing next to Rourke, slashes the wolf attacking Thorvin with her sickle. The curved blade finds purchase in the wolves hind quarters. Combined with the previous axe wound inflicted by Thorvin, this wolf is in a sad state. Rourke, attempting to please his mistress, leaps at the injured wolf, but its wily target once again dodges away from the attack.

Thorvin with calculated accuracy brings his axe in for the killing blow. The wolves ribs crack and shatter as the cutting edge of the axes slams into them. The wolf collapses on the ground in a heap, spasming its death throws. The dwarf victoriously takes a defensive stands and eyes the last remaining wolf with an eye full of determination.

Carrion, rustling about in his backpack this whole time, finds the object of his search and produces one of the field rations given to him by the people of Kassen. He unwraps the dried brick of preserved food and tosses it at the remaining wolf. The creature begins sniffing it with great interest. It would have been best for our village, and, indeed, for the wolf, if we had killed it, than for it to survive wounded and without pack." Virgil moves to place himself between the wolf and the fire and begins waving his arms and calling at in it in attempt to make it flee.

Virgil achieves success in his efforts as the lone remaining wolf scoops the ration up into it's maw and quickly runs off, quickly entering the shadowy area of your illumination.

Thorvin's eye's fly open and his mouth opens for a surprised gasp. The dwarf appears as if he has just been submerged in icy water or some such. As he stands, drawing his bow as he does so, his head is pounding. He losses an arrow, (Concealment Miss Chance 1d100 ⇒ 77) but only manages to score a glancing blow on the wolf's rear flank as it continues to run for its life, now with a pronounced limp.

Carrion turns to Thorvin angrily, filled with disapproval of his actions.

Conversation ensues. Let me know if there is anything else besides stinging up bells and performing a heal check on the injured before bed. When you are satisfied, I will move on.

When Carrion is complete with the twine and bell alarm, he then goes to sleep. "I also require 8 hours of sleep to replenish my energies, it would be appreciated if I was allotted that time. I'll do guard as well, just wake me."

Carrion goes back to sleep, as soon as he lies down.

How much sleep was actually had before the wolves attacked?
