Wolf, riding dog - trip attack automatic?

In the Bestiary preview, trip is listed with the damage for the attack. I looked in the specific ability descriptions at the front, didn't find it there. Is an additional CMB roll required, or does a creature bitten by a wolf just fall over?

Because of the conversion from 3.5's touch-then-strength model, in which the successful bite replaced the touch attack, I'm genuinely perplexed here; I could see it going either way. It's not really fair to require a second touch attack (which is part of the math behind the CMB mechanic), but it also seems a little ridiculous to let an attack vs. AC trip an elephant!

If you hit with the bite attack you may automatically try to make a trip attack without provoking an AoO or giving your opponent a chance to trip you back.

So you roll to hit, you do your damage, then you roll the CMB check to trip your opponent, if you fail to trip then nothing else happens. If you succeed your opponent is now prone.

Is this spelled out anywhere? Yes, I agree that this is probably how it's intended, but I think you can see where it can be read the other way and there's just enough doubt in my mind that I want to make sure.

Otherwise it would say "prone" as that is the condition. "Trip" is an attempt at giving the opponent the "prone" condition.

That's the way it's generally done. You can always make it a house rule if you can't find it anywhere.

That's solid enough for me and my players, thanks. :)
