Cleric Domain Spells and Abilities

Rules Questions

Been fighting with this since 3.5, and I still don't 'get' it. Playing a cleric of Sarenrae, and have chosen the Fire and Sun domains...easy enough. I'm pretty sure I figured out the +1 domain spells. I get to choose one spell per level, from either domain to prepare, like a bonus spell.

The part that is tripping me up are the abilities. Sun's Blessing (Sun), says whenever you channel... Is it active all the time? Do I have to tell the DM that I'm using it per round?

Or Fire Bolt (Fire). As a standard action... Do I basically have an unlimited number of divine bolts?

EDIT
*laughing* guess I should read the whole paragraph. :) figured out the fire bolt.

Assuming a 1st level Cleric with the Fire and Sun domains, you would have:

- Fire Bolt, usable a number of times per day equal to 3 + your Wisdom modifier.
- Sun's Blessing, whenever you channel positive energy. No limit listed so this is on all of the time.
- A bonus spell chosen from either domain, 1 per spell level that you can cast.

I have a similar problem with the "Nimbus of Light" Domain power. My Dm has ruled that because it fails to address this in the text, it takes one standard action to "activate" the effect. I say that because it doesn't have to be used on consecutive rounds than it can be used spontaneously. Like a litebulb-instant action. I know you shouldn't argue with the DM, but that's what we do. Any help?

Based on the wording of Sun's Blessing, you don't get a choice. When you channel energy, you add your cleric level. It doesn't say "you may add", it just says "add". That tells me it it's always active and that you get no choice, as it's using a command ("add" is commanding; "you may add" is giving you an option). As such, it shouldn't take an action to use. It's listed as supernatural because it needs to be listed as (ex.), (sp.), or (su.) for rules inquiries, but some supernatural abilities require no action on the part of the creature to use. As channel energy is supernatural, it is logical that an ability that affects channel energy is also supernatural.

Ok i caught it, edited it, but too late. I meant the wording on "Numbus of Light" but thanks for the quick reply..

It may not say in the specific "Numbus of Light" entry. However, check out the general text for Domains:

"Unless otherwise noted, using a domain power is a standard action"

When you activate Nimbus of Light, you use a standard action that doesn't provoke an attack of opportunity. It's a supernatural ability with no text to change how quickly you can use it, so the standard (so to speak) is a standard action that doesn't provke an AoO. You generate light as per daylight, burn undead, etc. You could shut it down whenever you like, normally it's a free action to end concentration on a spell, so your aura should shut down whenever you like as a free action so as to conserve power, so to speak.

I lose, i guess. Now that we've moved past the vampires in our campaign it's a moot point anyway. but thanks just the same.

Any suggestions for adding feats to a cleric to make him a better fighter? Now that our group has a cohort that's a dedicated healer,my cleric just buffs and flanks, but hits like a stormtrooper.
