'Sklar Quah' Shoanti Unarmed Combat Class?

Curse of the Crimson Throne

I have a player who was going to be playing the equivalent of a bar brawler/thug type, but in discussion prior to making characters things evolved into him making a Shoanti Sklar Quah tribesman who fights barehanded when he can.

My question to you folks would be, am I missing a class variant somewhere that would be a good fit for this? As it is now, and we start play tonight, the character is a monk, just minus the Eastern philosophy, but the progression for monks just doesn't seem to fit. My read on the culture is that they are somewhat similar to Comanches though minus the weaponry in some cases. I'm considering making a class variant of my own for this, but if there is something out there in some reference I just haven't found yet that would be a good fit that makes sense then I'd rather use that. Haven't DMd in 18 years, and so I'm still wrapping my head around some of the material, and my overprepping got things down to the wire quicker than I thought. Now I'm looking for time savers!

Oh, we are using PFRPG rules, btw.

I suppose I could just go and mangle monk up a bit to make it fit, really. The only real problem with it is a flavor problem, not so much a mechanical one.

Scarab Sages

Why not go with a fighter with unarmed attacks?
There are feats to help increase the damage die and the fighter feats help with a bunch of other things...

I'm forgetting specifically why we decided against that route, but after the first night of play on Sunday it looks like monk will work out rather well. I may switch some things around to reflect the entirely different culture and so forth (quivering palm for something else a bit more 'tribal', for instance), but things worked a lot better in play than I thought they would, flavor-wise.

My suggestion would be to do something similar to what a few of us were suggesting in Beta. Allow the "monk weapon" equivalents to be used with Flurry... Sickle, Club, etc.

Though in this case specifically, why not give him a list of "Tribal weapons" to replace(or add to) his monk weapons. Dagger, Short spear, Spear, Handaxe, Throwing Axe, etc.

IMO an "Unarmed" Fighter will never be as cool as a Monk, I've tried and even considered it VERY recently. (My resources only include Complete* and Races* splat books.) All the effort, feats and money you spend trying to make his unarmed attacks look similar to a Monk will eventually lob-side the character. Not to mention, if you have any other 'martial' characters in the party, you will eventually be really sad that you aren't using a 'real' weapon.

Good idea, and what I'll probably institute if anyone else plays a Sklar Quah Shoanti again. This character, though, forgoes weapons altogether as a chunk of that tribe apparently does.

In a nutshell that was exactly the problem with going the 'unarmed fighter' route, and we do have another fighter-type in the party. Monk worked in play *really* well, though, so we're going to stick with that, forego the weaponry (unless he changes his mind, which I doubt he will) and Comanchify the thing a bit:)
