I like the new mechanics of Cleave,
I think the new mechanics of Great Cleave are just ok,
but I also like the old mechanics of Cleave,
and I think the old mechanics of Great Cleave are just ok.
Since getting the book, I've been mulling over whether or not to perhaps combine the old with the new somehow.
On one hand, I thought of having both versions of Cleave in my game and let the players decide, but Great Cleave still would seem to be wanting.
Which has led me to my current thoughts on the subject:
1) Keep Cleave as is in Pathfinder
2) Keep Great Cleave as is in Pathfinder, but somehow roll in the mechanics of the older versions into it.
I haven't come up with the actual wording yet, but any thoughts on this?

Yes.
Mixed ones =P
I think Cleave as it is now, is more useable and less subject to certain abuses (like killing 6 targets each of whom has over 300 HP and AC's pushing 50 in one charge action, before they (or anyone else got to act...not that I've ever done it, but...I like, heard about it...yeah).
Great Cleave tho...meh. Why not just Whirlwind? I think Great Cleave would have been better stated as functioning as a full attack action, granting your normal attacks, each of which could generate a Cleave effect, but no more than one additional attack per regular attack you are allowed.
Meh. Just my two cents. As it is, Great Cleave just seems like a slightly wimpier muscle powered version of whirlwind attack to me.

Read great cleave again, it functions as a standard action. That makes it a mobile wimpy version of whirlwind attack.
As for a way of combining old greatcleave with new greatcleave, here's my thought.
Great Cleave: (insert what's already in the book)
Special: When using Great Cleave, if any of the targets you struck fall you may make an additional attack at your full base attack bonus against any target within reach.

And capable of using other feats and all, yeah, I know, but it also depends more on foe positioning as well. If theres two guys on opposite sides of you, your tolled with Great Cleave...they aren't adjacent to each other. Hence where the wimpy part comes in.
