Druid Shapeshifting

Rules Questions

The druid's ability to assume other forms requires the druid to "Have a piece of that creature" (iirc). Is it possible for my druid to use the Summon Natures Ally spells to summon a creature then take a piece of hair etc, or would the animals hair disappear with the animal itself? If so it makes the Elemental Body spells very hard to use..

The animals a druid can change to is limited by the environments he is familiar with. Most DM's determine familiarity by where your character grew up, and may add other areas later on. Having a piece of an animal has no influence.

Her options for new forms include

all creatures with the animal type. This ability functions
like the beast shape I spell, except as noted here. The effect
lasts for 1 hour per druid level, or until she changes back.
Changing form (to animal or back) is a standard action
and doesn’t provoke an attack of opportunity. The form
chosen must be that of an animal with which the druid
is familiar.

Beast Shape I
School transmutation (polymorph); Level sorcerer/wizard 3
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S, M (a piece of the creature whose form you plan
to assume)

Except that Wild Shape is a supernatural ability, and therefor doesn't have material components.

Most GMs handwave inexpensive material components. Personally if I were to enforce this I would have the druid go to a location where they might encounter the creature and make an appropriate survival check. Summoned creatures return to their home plane and I would assume all stray bits of them return as well.

Ah, that solves it.

I did warn my party for this particular campaign I'd be a bit annoying about rare and/or expensive material components. That being said things like elemental body would be rather difficult for a wizard to do, I suppose I will hand wave most the costless mats after all.

I don't think you need to HAND-WAVE it 100%.
You generally assume their Spell Component Pouch contains whatever cheap components for their spells, but this doesn't mean it can't be stolen or taken away by captors/guards, or if they fall in the water you can't improv a skill check to separate the soggy bits.
You should also be free whenever you want to thow a side-trek into the plot, to say "oh, looks like component X of Y spell is down to it's last piece, better go look for some more if you want to cast that spell. word around town says it's found around Z area".
You get the idea.

I have a friend that is playing in 3.5 game, but after reading the druids handbook on the wizards site he went a little powergamy with the creatures he could turn into, but the concept is sound.

What he did was any time he had the opputurnity is familairise himself with new animals he would. So anytime he went into a town he would go too the local zoo or market place looking for exotic animals. Then would research as much as he could about them. Then he could turn into many of the options present in the handbook.

So basically do the same.

Quick question with the druid shapeshift.... if you transform into a wolf, do you still gain their free trip attempt when you hit? Reading the polymorph description i understand you dont gain any of the special abilities of creatures.... but would it include feats etc?

I know you use the dex or str modifier (whichever would be applicable, ie, earth elemental = str, fire elemental = dex)

Thanks in advance guys :D

A druid of 6th level or higher would gain the trip ability if he'd shape into an animal with that ability.

Beast Shape, Elemental Body and Plant Shape all list the abilities you can gain by polymorphing.
Feat are not included, though. Neither are bonuses to skills at this moment.

Ah that makes sense, tyvm, i was just lazy and read beastshape I and didn't see trip, even though I could turn into a wolf... I guess it makes it so beast shape II allows you to become a medium creature, just unlocks more abilities and you only get the stat bonuses as if it was beast shape I (If I'm correct... :P ).

Wild shape = the reason why druids are the most complex... yet most fun characters in D&D lol
