Liberty's Edge

The paladin mutters a short prayer to Pelor, asking forgiveness for disturbing the deceased's resting place.

Male Human 4 Wizard

Dartalis bows his head in respect. "Forgive us our disturbance of your rest, Ancient One. I thought perhaps you held some secret that would help us rid this place of evil."

Marcus begins to move around the room, searching for any concealed doors or any other way out of the tomb.

search +9 = 22

Marcus

Spoiler:
You make a thorough search of the walls, floor and ceiling, before turning round , ready to give up. It's then that you spot that the bottom of the coffin interior doesn't seem to match up with the depth of its external sides.

Male Human Rogue/7

"Pardon me, old friend," Marcus says as he reaches into the coffin and pulls the body out, laying it gently on the floor. "What do we have here?" Marcus shines his sunrod into the coffin.

Marcus

Spoiler:
It appears that there is a false base to the coffin. The bottom seem to lift out using a recessed brass handle.

Male Human Rogue/7

"I love history," Marcus says, a smile forming. Grabbing the brass handles, he pulls the bottom of the coffin out and stands it against the wall.

Marcus

Spoiler:
Recessed into the lining of the coffin is a +1 keen short sword and an ivory scroll case worth 25 gp containing a scroll of 3
arcane spells: mage armor, enervation and levitate.

Male Human Rogue/7

"Found something." Marcus steps back for the others to see.

Shadow Lodge

"Sorry for disturbing you, old one. We mean you no disrespect."

Male Tabaxy Paladin 2

"It is obvious that the blade is well made. May it serve you well."

Male Human 4 Wizard

Dartalis nods to Marcus, his eyes reflecting a measure of respect. "Good catch, Mouse. I certainly would have missed that."

Liberty's Edge

"This doesn't make any sense," muses Joneth. "The hideous smell must be coming from someplace. This tunnel must lead to somewhere the enemy seeks to protect."

Joneth bows apologetically to the disinterred corpse. He then tries to push the coffin aside, hoping to find a trapdoor or portal underneath.

Female Human (Sarcosan) Fighter 2/ Chaneller 3

"I don't think there's any shortage of sources for the stink in this place."

Liberty's Edge

Come think of it, there are lots of other entrances back at the surface: the old well, the bricked up tunnel.

Dont forget that you took the left passage to get to this location; there is still the right hand passage to take ("you see that a passage way stretches ahead of you, made of roughly worked stone, bending slightly to the right. About 10' down it, another passage leads off it to the left.")...Helpful DM hint no.1 He He.

Liberty's Edge

Let's go that way then (I hope no one objects.) Thanks!

Agreed

Sounds good.

No objections here.

Female Human (Sarcosan) Fighter 2/ Chaneller 3

Let's do it

Male Tabaxy Paladin 2

Agreed

You all make your way cautiously back to the point in the tunnel where it branched. As the left hand fork took you to what amounted to a dead end, you decide that the right hand passage may offer better means of progress.

You carefully follow the passage for about 20' until it opens into a rectangular room, around 30' long by 20' wide. The room is strewn with bits of bones and loose dirt. A cool breeze blows by, and whispering can be heard off in the darkness. This room has several small piles of
bones that appear to have originated from the graveyard above. The air is drafty and rather fresh. You can make out a closed wooden door on the far side of the chamber.

Male Tabaxy Paladin 2

Num-Rah sniffs the air, trying to sense any scent on the breeze.

"I suggest we spread out. Watch your step." Marcus says as he makes his way towards the door, as usual, he looks before he leaps.

spot +7 = 13. . .hello darkness, my old friend. . . .

Liberty's Edge

Joneth follows Marcus in.

"I smell fresh air. Have we happened upon an exit?"

"Be careful, it would seem the ceiling is falling apart. Let us be through this room quickly."

Moving cautiously across the room, Koryn heads for the closed door.

"Aye, this place is not made to be friendly to visitors, is it?" Ulven rumbles, deep in his chest.

Beyond the door is another chamber. Broken furniture is everywhere in this 30' by 30' room, and a skeleton sits in a large chair facing you. Red, poisonous-looking ants crawl all over the skeleton and chair. On the table with the skeleton is a deck of cards. A tapping sound emanates
from a hallway visible through an arched doorway on the far side of the room.

Male Tabaxy Paladin 2

"By the Feathered Serpent, I hate bugs. They are to small to hit properly!"

Liberty's Edge

"We encountered an undead skeleton in the mausoleum. I'll take no chances with this one."

Joneth brings his gleaming sword down on the skeleton's skull.

The Exchange

"What a great time to not be a druid..."
Holding his holy symbol, Koryn mutters a small spell that allows him to see the presence of magical auras...

Detect Magic on the room.

"You do not need to be noble to be a paladin Marcus, merely chosen."

Male Tabaxy Paladin 2

"Those cards... it seems strange that someone should die playing them. Perhaps they are poisonous or cursed? Have you received answer to your prayer, priest?"

The Exchange

Num-Rah wrote:

"I'll worry about the cards after I am sure there are no magical threats here. I do not wish to be attacked by an unseen minion of Orcus."

"Perhaps they are merely divination tools."

"He drew a bad hand then!" Ulven steps on some of those poisonous ants, making a squelching noise.

Sorry for missing a post yesterday guys. I was transfering to a new broadband network.

Joneth Soulborn wrote:

Joneth brings his gleaming sword down on the skeleton's skull.

Joneth shatters the skeletons skull into pieces and due to the force of the blow, the skeletal remains topple out of the chair into a heap on the floor.

Spoiler:
You detect no magic

"Now that Joneth has slayed the foul undead, shall we move on?" Marcus makes his way to the door, checking it search +9 = 12 before, attempting to open it.

The Exchange

"Strange, there is no magic in this room. Perhaps the man was poisoned and left here?"

Koryn walks over to the table and picks up the deck of cards.

Actually it's just an open archway. Beyond the archway you see a passage of rough stone that stretches away to the left and right in a straight line. To the right, the passage travels on into darkness but to the left, it runs for about 30' before opening up into another chamber.

Koryn. The top card is the Ace of Spades

Spoiler:
Can you make a Fortitude roll. DC12

Three broken arrows stick out of the wall in the arched entryway and a smashed wooden door lies broken on the floor. Two human-sized skeletons are here also, lying just inside the room in a heap.

One of the skeletons is headless and both show signs of extreme corrosion, as if by acid. Everything in the room is smashed and corroded except for a small desk in the north east corner. The room itself has walls of rough stone.

Their appears to be a very badly concealed secret door on the north wall that is very easy to spot because it is open a crack. A
horrible smell issues from beyond this door; the same smell that has been afronting your senses for a while now.
