The Spellblade - Revised

Homebrew and House Rules

Hey guys,

I really like the idea of a spellblade as a class. However, as much as I like the Tome of Secrets I don't think they did much justice to the classes. Here's my revision of a spellblade.

Please critique it Honestly.

Is this intended for Pathfinder? The first item that jumps out at me is the fighter HD but cleric BAB. Just a little clarification would help.

The spell list looks fairly balanced for a melee-oriented caster. I don't see any instant win spells and with the buff ability the class has I would set it at d8/medium BAB myself.

The capstone ability doesn't quite mesh to me, seeming more like a grab bag of nice abilities. I think the crit-immunity throws me off the most.

Shift Enhancement sounds like a handy ability for when something unexpected comes your way, but should probably be clarified to make sure it can't be abused. Something like "new enhancements cannot cost more than the current enhancements." Not sure there are any ways to do this, but just to hedge out the possibility of 'pay 200gp for an ability, convert it into a +1 bonus priced ability'.

The only thing I see about Arcane Shield is that it will encourage two-handed fighting. "What's that, I have a free shield I don't need to hold? Greatsword for me!" Could also combine with the crit enhancements of Attune Weapon. Scythe/heavy pick, anyone?

The damage reduction needs a bit more explanation as well, much like the crit immunity. Just doesn't jive with what I would expect from the class.

Overall, I see this as kind of the combination of Duskblade/Abjurant Champion. I'm not sure it would completely replace fighters and the like, but it could be a close one.

Thanks for the look through.

I've never been of the mind that BAB must match HD. Pathfinder made that rule up, using ranger from D&D 3.5 as my example. Essentially, I wanted an arcane defender. He's spent less time training his reflexive swings then the fighter, so he's less capable as a straight up meleeist.

You're spot on for the cap stone. I need to refine it, because I went "S+*$, I don't have a cap stone.. what would be nice?"

I can see your point on Arcane Shield.

I can explain that DR. Thanks for the suggestion!

I didn't want to step on anyone's toes, but I wanted an Arcane tank. There's too many divine tanks about, and I've always wanted to play a mage that was the defender of the group.

Thanks again!

I've made some changes. Please see the original post for the download link.

Nothing else?

I am having trouble downloading the revised version. Is it just me.

I appear to have been able to download the RTF without an issue. Try a different browser perhaps? I'm using Chrome.

Got it. Thanks.

What about an ability to apply meta magic feats?

Arcane reduction starts magic resistance 5+ level?

Is Arcane Shield a conscience effort? If it is more automatic would it be considered a reflection bonus?

On Attuned weapon what about a magical modifier that increases with the characters level?

For arcane avatar you may want to consider the character becomes a magical creature and is therefore not considered humanoid and there is not effected by spells targeted at humanoids.

Just some thoughts.

While I do feel this that version is WAY better than the original, keeping the original infusions would have been a nice touch too. Kind of like having your cake and eating it too. The d10 HD might be a bit much.

Thanks for the replies. I wanted to make clear that this class is more of a defender, then an assaulter. The abilities within are meant to help keep the tank alive.

Arcane Shield is like the spell shield, just scales better. I felt a magical enhancement that levels with you would be too powerful, considering that's half of what a soulknife does.

Magical Humanoid is what I was looking for, thanks.

What infusions do you mean?

The +1 abilities that make the weapon +1 to +5 and bane, flaming, cold, seeking, etc. I liked those as they kind of made the class not unlike the Soulknife.
