Military Ranks in Cheliax (no spoilers please)

Liberty's Edge

Hi all,

My CoT character is ex-military and I want to give him a rank. He's gonna be the immortal sergeant or regimental sergeant major type, but I don't wanna call him Sarge. :) I was wondering if there were any ranks for the Chellish military out there, or if I should go digging in historical sources (roman legions maybe?).

This is by no way official, but a good place to look is in the Pathfinder campagin book under the hell knight section, they have ranks there. Also, this is the non official stuff, I see a very close relation to real world Roman ranks when dealing with Chelaxian titals. Not only in the Hell Knight ranks (signifer and others), but in the Imperial Magistrix and beutracratic Imperium...In short, look to the real world history of rome for inspiration! It would be awsome if Wes came in and gave us some hints!

Hmmm

Entombed with the Pharoahs: The chelish soldiers in this adventure are called Chelish legionnaires, so you could use roman, or french foreign legion ranks and it should sound alright.

Liberty's Edge

Thanks for the feedback! I was thinking Roman legion made sense. Anyone know the equivalent rank of RSM in the legion? ;)

First spear? - Like Lucius Vorenus from Rome.

Spoiler:

There were a total of 59 Centurions that served in an Imperial Legion. The most senior Centurion in the Legion was termed the Primus-Pilus "First Spear" and he was in command of the First (double-size) Century of the Legion. The other four Senior Centurions serving under him in the First Cohort, comprised of four additional "double centuries", would be, in descending rank, the Princeps, Hastatus, Princeps-Posterior and Hastatus-Posterior. These five Senior Centurions out-ranked all of the other more "Junior" Centurions of the Legion and were known as the Primi-Ordines "First (top) Line/Order".

The other 54 more Junior Centurions each commanded one of the six standard size Centuries in the 2nd through 10th Cohorts of the Legion and were termed, within their Cohort, in descending rank, as Pilus-Prior, Princeps-Prior, Hastatus-Prior, Pilus-Posterior, Princeps-Posterior and Hastatus-Posterior. The number of the Cohort was placed before each of these titles; such as Secundas-Pilus-Prior, Secundas-Princeps-Prior, Secundas-Hastatus-Posterior (2nd Cohort); Sextus-Pilus-Posterior (6th Cohort) or Decimus-Hastatus-Prior (10th Cohort). The attainment of the rank of Primus-Pilus was the aim of every "career minded" legionary soldier. The position was generally held for one year, when the Primus-Pilus, who could then be over 50 years old, would retire as a Primipilaris (ex Primus-Pilus) from military service or be appointed as a Tribune or Praefectus Castraorum (superintendent of the camp) responsible for the units equipment and transport.

The other senior officers were the Tribunes in charge of the Cohorts and the Legatio in command of the Legion. The Legatio and Tribune, along with a Legate and Prefect, were generally appointed by the Senate and they may or may not of had much military experience. Their respective ranks today would be General, Colonels and Majors.

Found a perfect rank: Optio Centuriae
This was the centurion's "chosen man", who served as second in command.

So, how do I conjugate that? Optio Centurion?

Wasn't Lucius Vorenus an officer as compared to an RSM (regimental sergrant major) which is the highest ranking nco in a regiment. In the FFL the highest nco ranks are adjudtant and adjudant-chef. Aquilifer seems to fit into the RSM position best if comparing RSM to the Roman legions.

He was a centurion at the start, was he not? He later rose to the rank of prefect. Both are officer ranks I think.

No dispute there.
