What Dwarven Forge to get?

So, I am risking the complete explosion of my demented inner collector by looking into getting some Dwarven Forge stuff. I figure I'll start by spending $300 bucks, plus shipping, or so then pick up extra stuff at Birthdays and Christmas (my son has already asked for a set for his 1st birthday, and my wife is just so excited about getting more for me to game with. Not to mention my own birthday, which I am thinking of extending to a Birthday Month with daily presents).

What to buy? It looks to me as if with only $300 I should get a basic dungeon set and one of the expansions and then pick up some other stuff to make up the money (or wait until the advanced set I reappears and get that and advanced set II and the basic set and bust my budget by 30 bucks or so). The caverns are way cool but I think that to make a complete cavern system is even more expensive than corridors and rooms, so I should buy into that more slowly (basically be able to start with the odd cave/cavern and then add more until I can build a complex).

What sort of outlay are we talking to have a reasonable AP-size underground complex of rooms and corridors set out at once? $1000? More?

Also, what are people's favoured storage methods for this stuff? I am pretty sure my wife was desperate to get more bookshelves for my office for her birthday...

The best storage for the DF stuff is actually the boxes they come in...if you're space conservative

(X-Roommate bought those instead of paying me rent when he made first class...what a Richard...)

When we first started with the dwarven forge stuff we got a basic dungeon set, a couple of smaller expansions, and either one or two cavern sets. I don't really remember anymore. The best way to store it that I found was narrow shelving, like you'd use for cds. But you may find something else works better for you. Personally I think dwarven forge is supercool, but in the end, it wasn't for us. I finally convinced my husband of that too, so I now have a big box of the stuff sitting in my garage.

That should surely be sold to handsome expatriate gamers in the North-Eastern US!

If that's a hint, I'd be happy to sell the stuff. :)

You can send me an email at

Not to derail your thread, but have you ever seen the Hirst arts molds?

http://www.hirstarts.com/

They are certainly more flexible, but the main constraint here would be time. If you've ever enjoyed Legos, the idea will really grab you, but I can put in this warning, I have 5 molds sitting here for a few years (most of the field stone set) and have yet to do anything significant with them.

Might be worth checking out though.

That would be a cool addition, oh yes. Like Linka but for fantasy.

Hmmmm.....

That would be in addition to Dwarven Forge stuff. Hope Lynora got my email...

So, you have a <1yr old son, who not only grasps the concept of a dungeon, but the concept of building said dungeon from parts to game with, *and* can communicate well enough to ask for said 1st birthday.....Not to mention understanding what a birthday is....

Or did you decide this is what he want's you to play with :)

Are you kidding me? My son has played with ours more than we have. Although he wasn't allowed to touch them until he was two. :)

BTW, Bagpuss, I got your email and will reply to it tomorrow. I have to take my kid to a fair today. Summer is always so crazy busy.

Out of curiosity since I have been batting around getting some for my gaming groups, what made you decide they were not for you?

We never really used them much. The setup time was a bit much for us. And recently we gave up using the battlemat altogether so that was a pretty big factor in our decision to let go of them.

I'm heading in the opposite direction; I love minis and because I've gotten back into painting them, the battlemat is getting a little underexciting.

Plus, I can imagine spending a lot of time just making stuff with them. Like fantasy lego awesomeness.

My groups do love visuals but usually for the unique scenes. The DM for our Savage Tide game went so far as to build a to scale in color Sea Wyvern and a half scale Crimson Fleet tree headquarters (it was still huge!). The only thing holding me back was the relatively high monetary layout to get a nice selection of Dwarven Forge. Of course on the flip side, I certainly don't use mini's for everything. I like a mix so roleplaying skills are kept sharp. Thus, also part of the reason I have waffled so long, lol. Just can't quite figure out whether it'll be worth the expense.

Here are the links to the stuff he did for the curious:
Sea Wyvern
Crimson Fleet headquarters video
Crimson fleet headquarters pics
Demogorgon Prince of Demons pic
Demogorgon video with voice over created by the DM and my brother for the final encounter
