Stolen laptop

Customer Service

My laptop has been stolen, and it had my downloads from paizo on it. What can I do to keep from getting into trouble if the thief decides to fileshare them? Can I re-initialize them or something?

Thank you for letting us know. We don't have a way to stop those files from being shared. However, if we do find that those files have been shared we'll know what happened.

Sorry for your laptop, buddy. That sucks. :(

I always wondered something about laptops : Do they have an identity, a profile of some sort, which can be tracked or located ?
I mean, do the manufacturers see them connecting for updates, up to the point they can detect a connection, an IP ?

Inherently, no. At least not the the manufacturers let on.

There is software you can buy that will allow a laptop to be tracked if stolen though, in the same way there is for cars...

The other option is to just encrypt the hard drive, that way, at least you know no vital data is going to go walkabout. This is something I've always meant to do.....

While there are solutions available for this, they're not generally in place for most folks.

I think it's probably unlikely whomever stole the laptop has the intent to share the contents within. My guess would be that they plan to wipe the hard drive and sell it on the black market. Or strip it for parts. Or mine it for personal data to steal your identity. But unless they are malicious gamers, I don't expect they'll go out of their way to share pdfs from the drive.

Sucks to be in your situation, though. My life is on my laptop. Best of luck to you.

But if you DO pay for the software that allows the computer to be tracked, it works wonderfully... we get laptops with school and some were stolen my sophomore year, they tracked them to another country when they were first logged onto the internet after being sold on ebay.

Thanks for your kind words, guys. :) I hope they do just wipe the drive, I had a bunch of passwords on there. X( I spent all day yesterday trying to remember the various sites so I could change my passwords. You wouldn't happen to know the name of the software you can use to track stolen stuff, would you? Or a good encryption program?

Do you even have anything to identify the thing? MAC-Adresses or the like (not that they cannot be changed, but still).

I may have the MACs on my router at home; I'll have to check when I get back. Other than that, I'm afraid I'm SOOL.

I haven't played with any of the tracking things, just read about them... But this should get you going....

This is some really nice encryption software, but do make sure you keep a hard copy of the key!

Krisam, that sucks around he block and back. I'm so sorry you have to go through this.

My new XPS laptop is Lo-Jacked. Now that this is an available feature, I'll not be buying another laptop without it. My mac laptop, which is only a year old doesn't have that sort of protection, but if they don't have it yet for Apple, I'm sure they will.

Oh, and let's toast the death of thieves.

You mean you didn't have it trapped with Explosive Rune?

There is a product called Undercover which is like Lojack for your macbook

I've heard a lot of good things about this though I haven't used it myself. $50 is a tiny investment.

There is a free (open source) program being worked on. There are some issues with it currently, but if they iron those out it would be a low cost, in this case free, option. I've thought about it but I keep a pretty tight eye on mine. Casual access is restricted (it has fingerprint and facial recognition security) unless I leave it laying around.

Thanks, everyone! Good links, and I hadn't even heard of LoJack until now (not that they offer services in my country, but...). I just wish I'd known about it earlier, and could get ahold of that "#€%"%# thief.
