You remind me of the babe...

What babe?

The babe with the power...

What power?

The power of voodoo...

Now that I have your attention, anyone know of any 3.0/3.5 material on voodoo? A quick search of the Dragon Magazine index and the messageboard archives turned up nothing.

Anyone know where to point me?

It seems like one could use the Binder class rules as a basis.

The vestiges could represent the spirits communicated with through the voodoo rituals.

From a quick Google search, it seems that Skull & Bones is the only source to have it, and it's level of detail is iffy.

The 3.5 Dark Matter setting has a half-page write-up including 4 spells specific to a houdan type caster:

Gris-gris: creates a small herbal bag to protect the wearer from magical attack.

Ju-ju: summons protective spirit to ward the subject in times of stress.

Fetish: creates a voodoo doll to curse and damage target.

Rides: summons loa-spirit to possess caster and answer divinations.

That's a fair start and covers most of the basics!

I have another source, but I haven't had my coffee yet, but flip through Heroes of Horror or the Ravenloft Campaign Setting -pretty sure they address it there, too.

Thank you for your prompt replies at this disturbingly early hour.

Also,

You are now picturing David Bowie's package.

*runs away laughing*

Mmmm. Package. Doh!

Actually, here is an interesting idea: Would the modifiers to will saves listed within the Scrying spell be a suitable base for a voodoo doll magic concept? Or even for all magic in general? Should it be limited to will saves or more than that? What about targeting, should it apply to individuals within an AoE, or be restricted to single target spells.

I somewhat like the idea that because I am "familiar" with a recurring villian, that my effects are more threatening against him. And likewise for his own against me.

Similarily, this could give a new vitality to scrying as a way to gain familiarity with a foe before engaging them in combat.

I feel as if I have tread upon the tip of an iceberg, an iceberg that is either made of delicious sparkling apple cider, or a curious yellow liquid smelling of asparagus. Time will tell, I must ponder it more.

I've seen that movie like 20 times. Love it.

And yeah, on-topic, Skull & Bones is the only d20 voodoo treatment I know of, but I don't own it, so I can't say as to how good it is.

IIRC, there's a section on 'Sympathetic Magic' in Magic, by AEG, but I don't know how well it would port over to a voodoo style.

IMO, the best ever treatment of voodoo, with the whole mounting by loas thing, would be a sideways tweak on the Binder class. The houngan/mambo/bokor would 'bind' appropriate loa like Baron Samedi or Chango or Agwe and channel their abilities for the day, instead of the current list of Vestiges.

The Trinity psionics system uses that option for some types of psi. Instead of being range-based, Clairsentience, Telepathy, Teleportation, etc. is familiarity based. So a telepath might be able to 'talk' to her son, who is currently stationed on an extrasolar colony many thousands of light years away, but have trouble making mental contact with a stranger across the street.

Psionics ignoring real world measurements of time, distance and mass is hardly a new concept, and probably best exemplified by the words of Jim Henson, "Too big? Size matters not." and "You must unlearn what you have learned." Once the psion has accepted that he can move objects with his mind, moving a ten ton thing is no more 'impossible' than moving a quarter was before, it's just a matter of letting go of artificially imposed limitations.

On the other hand, from a game-balance and world-building standpoint, stuff like that can be a nightmare. How would a world change if the magic (or psi, or whatever) had no concept of 'too heavy to move' or 'too far to travel' or 'too long ago to remember?' Massive changes. Far away colonies would come under attack, and relatives of people present might be immediately aware of the attack. People familiar with items brought to that new colony might be able to transport instantly there, regardless of distance. Mystery adventures would become harder to arrange, or have to fall back on the tired kludge of 'this attack was done by something that you can't sense magically!', which is the same as saying, 'let's pretend I didn't allow magic in this campaign, because it's interfering with my plotline...'

You remind me of the MAN...

You might want to see what the d20 Deadlands did with voodoo...they had a enough of a system that our table sported a voodoo priest who would hold Voodoo revivals to find converts.

What king of Magic Spell to use?

Slugs and Snails?
And puppy dogs tails?

I just go with my tried and true Isle of Dread Witch Doctor (Death Cleric/Necromancer).
