I was recently reading about dancer Cheryl Burke, and it got me thinking ...

What does "Fat" mean?

I think that the definitions we are currently using -in the United States at least- are "broken." :(

So, what I want to ask is ...

  • Is our current definition of fat actually broken?
  • If so, how did it get that way?
  • Can we do anything to help fix it?

Spoiler:
I can tell you that this poster likes looking at "Beautiful, Sexy Women" as much or more then the next guy. This is what upset me about this subject. :(

Dark Archive

Watching Dollhouse, I was really impressed with the decision to do as much as they did with the character of November / Millie, because the actress has a little more meat on her bones than is typically seen on a prime time show.

But yeah, if Cheryl Burke is what is today considered 'fat,' then 99 out of 100 people I pass on the street are water buffalo in drag.

I can not help but wonder if a lot of women who beat themselves up for being 'fat' would simply find something else about their perceived body image to obsess about if they were not 'fat'.

Maybe you are fat. Guess what. You are never going to be Angelina Jolie. Angelina probably thinks her legs look awkward or her shoulders are too boney. Get healthy and learn to love you because it is the only you you are ever going to be.

As for the media, it can kiss my furry white behind. Put me down with Sir Mix-a-Lot and Humpty Hump.

"I like big butts and I can not lie."
"A fat girl, come here. Are you ticklish?"

Let's not forget Queen.

"Fat-bottomed girls, you make the rocking world go 'round!"

Salty Milk magazine? That is the real name? Really?

EDIT:: For that alone, I'd suggest a PNSFW tag next to it.

Good catch. How could I forget Queen.

I doubt that (the magazine name) will be a huge problem.

As to the rest ...
What about the other two questions:

  • What do you think caused the problem?
  • What do you think can we do about it?

The one thing I tell every guy thats hired at the library is you NEVER talk about weight or age!

Its a trap.

No one can repel firepower of that magnitude!

Humans are never satisfied with what they have (are). Sprinkle in some advertising aimed specifically at insecurities.

This can only be 'fixed' by each individual. We need to accept ourselves as we are.

Cheryl? Fat?

Feh. She's gotten some curves this season, makes her more yummy than ever. Now we just need her to 'dress' more like Edtya and I'll be a happy dragon.

I remember reading Jewel Staite having to *gain* weight to play Kaylee for Firefly.

I was reminded of the shallowness of the world last night suffering through the American Idol finale (thank the Divine for the internets to tune it out) with bikini girl. When they commented on her, um, augmentation, my thoughts were 'why would you take a nice body and ruin it by sticking stuff that doesn't belong in it?'

The mutt's right, we have to be comfortable with ourselves. I've realized that John Carter was right. The three most powerful words are 'I still live.'

That's funny, I always thought the three most powerful words were "Sebastian did it."

The woman is a dog IMO, oh wait I forgot who I was talking to, go get 'er puppy.

I'm no expert on the female form, what with preferring the male form and all. But she looks like she has the kind of figure that would have been pinup girl standard a few decades back, so really she's quite thin but likely not unhealthily so. What passes for Hollywood acceptable lately is different story.

I think that is part of the problem. Where did this change of standard come from.

(And, if this "standard" is something real, then we need to push it back to something a little "more healthy.")

The Exchange

Lets bring back the standard of Audrey Hepburn, the single most beautiful creature God ever created. It's a fact, I saw it on the internet. ;)

I'm not especially learned on the topic, but you can see the shift just over the past century towards more and more unrealistically and unhealthily thin women. Compare Marylin Monroe to Kate Moss. I remember back in the 90s Kate Winslet got a lot of press for being a woman of normal proportions, with the intimation that she was actually a bit on the plump side.

The problem with trying to use an iconic Hollywood image is that someone is going to find your choice unappealing. Paris Hilton does nothing for me, yet I dare say a majority of guys would agree she is an iconic Hollywood image.

I do find Angelina Jolie attractive, but I have a rather long list ahead of her.

The Exchange

Oh... Marylin. It's like a Purto Rican friend of mine puts it "A man, he like da meat, He give da bones to da dogs." Not very PC but I kinda agree with him.

RPG Superstar 2009 Top 32

Okay, then I have some more "powerful (and true) words" for you. :)

She is not fat! Not at all!!!

Dark Archive

I don't care if she's got arms like twigs, Angelina Jolie remains hot.

Paris Hilton, 'though? She's hideous. And it's a facial thing, so I don't think eating a sammich would help.

Ru Paul makes a better looking 'woman' than Paris.

I have a question for these supposed people who have such high standards for skinniness: if she winces every time you pat her shoulder, leg or whatever, how does she hold up in bed?

LOL, I've often said I have no intrest in a woman who looks like she'll break if things get...uhm...rough.

Don't forget Spinal Tap...

"Big Bottom, Big Bottom,
Talk about mudflaps,
My girl's got'em.

Big Bottom drives me out of my mind.
How can I leave this behind....."

I wish they'd show more women like her. It would be good for our girls to see human-looking women on TV (and it didn't hurt that the actress playing November was a total hottie).

Watched a special on TLC once, before it became the Jon and Kate channel.

They talked that plumpness aside, it appears to be hardwired into men to be attracted to a .8 ratio of bust to hips to waist.

For women, beauty is subjective. A man with a guy used to be considered attractive, since it showed he was a successful hunter and could hunt longer, with more reserves.

So I've decided I'm not fat... I'm 'anachronistically attractive.'

I have to disagree with you here, I've read a number of studies (I'm a Psych major i read studies about everything), that show men ARE happy with what they look like (no matter what they look like, men always believe women are attracted to them). And more than 90% of the time men indicate that they are attracted to women who are of a healthy size.

Woman on the other hand, believe that men are attracted to women unhealthily small, and seem to think that they are bigger than they actually are.

So what can we do about it? Nothing, this has nothing to do with men, this is a woman's body issue. It's obvious that despite the fact that we ARE attracted to properly shaped women, it has no influence on what women think we are attracted to.

This is something that both individuals and our the women in our society have to fix.

Note: All studies are on heterosexual men and women and focus primarily on U.S. citizens.

I had never heard of her before this so I checked out the linked pictures. All I have to say is DAMN! She is beautiful and the guy who called her fat is an idiot.

Like some others here I like women with bigger butts than are usually featured on TV. Vida Guerra, Melyssa Ford, Kim Kardashian etc... Oh yes, more brunettes too.

I'm with samwell on this topic, I too prefer a hard bodied fit guy than some soft funny smelling woman.

I can however point out that in answer to an earlier question, the shift in society's perception was due to a female model named twiggy. She was held up as the new
'it to be followed and the classic curves of Jane Mansfield, Marlyn Monroe and others with their figures of 36-24-36 ,which by todays standards would be considered unhealthy, were lost to a different era.

I do sympathize for the problems women face in relation to their figures but until the ladies start realizing that their own sense of self and confidence in themselves will attract a man faster than anything jenny craig can bottle theirs no help for them.
To quote a line from: To Wong foo thanks for everything, Julie newmare.
"carry yourself like a queen and you will attract a king"

Now if you'll excuse me I have to hit the gym.

The Exchange

"He/She is FAT!" is thanks a lot to the observer, partly to the stress on the Victim, and mostly due to the toxic lifestyle.

Twiggy? Yeah my father once told me about her...anorexic to the point of a hat stand. The darling of weird old little fasion designers from france. Only ever saw her in one movie - and she was Naiome Cambell average.
