Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

Supposing I wanted to develop my own campaign in Golarion, without using the AP's, which resource would be more useful to me in learning about the world - Pathfinder Chronicles or Campanion. Is one designed to be more AP specific and the other more general?

Liberty's Edge

Pathfinder Chronicles

they are books about the setting, the Companions are tools for the players

The Chronicles are going to have the majority of the information you'll need, but the Companions delve into specific areas with more details, so you'll want to look at those if there's a particular area you want to play in.

Yup. Also don't forget to cherry pick from Pathfinder itself, as we've done (and will continue doing) regional treatments of places that won't be detailed by the Chronicles for some time.

Well, start with the Campaign Setting, and then get anything Chronicles and/or Companion (and, indeed, Pathfinder) that discusses the topic(s) you want to know more about.

Note, though, that the Companions are a bit heavier on the crunch. They usually have a number of Character traits, some feats, some magic, as pertaining to the topic at hand.

Chronicles products also have some of that, but not quite as much, and since they're also larger, the fluff:crunch ratio will be a lot more in favour of flavour.

Don't hesitate to ask about stuff here, though. You can always get a general picture about things, and if the topic at hand has been covered, we can let you know where you can find the stuff.

Don't discount the APs, either. Each volume has short chapters that can be used completely independently from the campaign. Topics include specific cities, deities, races, etc. I didn't expect so much material and I've been pleasantly surprised.

I often get confused about these things. Which Pathfinder line are you referring to when you say "Pathfinder itself"?

I'm pretty sure he meant the APs :) With all the articles and goodness that are in the back, like the marketplaces of Katapesh in LOF, etc.

Yeah; the Pathfinder Adventure Path books are half adventure, half support articles, basically. Any one volume of an AP might have gazetteers of parts of Golarion, articles about the deities, ecology-style writeups of monster races, explorations of major cities, short adventure sites, and more!

I'd go with this. Pick up the Campaign setting, and figure out what area you want to set your campaign in. Look at titles of the various products that are out, many of them will be identifiable from the book title as to if they will help or not. and check out The Wiki on your topic, and the area around it. each article is (or at least should be) cited telling you the book and page number it came from, helping you to choose books that suit what you are building (note the wiki is a project in progress, and we currently only have about 1300 articles up, so right now you may not find what you are looking or, but feel free to write some articles as you research for your campaign)

That is an awesome idea.

I'm also new to running games in Golarion and am doing what's been suggested in this thread-- I grabbed the campaign setting and some adventure path releases and some other titles of interest. Once I get more familiar with contributing to a Wiki, I'll write some articles.

The short answer is that Paizo makes so many great products, and mix them all up that really you should just get a part time job and subscribe to everything.

lol

I would if I could!
