Cosmo - my errant order arrived today, much to my relief. It appears to have been delayed by Canadian Customs.

To your knowledge, is this common? While I was not assessed any duty, I was charged $4.05 GST (Goods & Services Tax) plus a $5.00 handling charge. The package contained books only. Perhaps it's just the luck of the draw - this is the first time I've ever had customs intercept a package from Paizo.

Thank you!

Excellent news! I have no idea how/why this particular package would have been dinged by customs. The good news is that you have it. I have canceled the replacements.

thanks,

There really isn't a rhyme or reason as to why certain shipments get charged GST by customs although technically we should be paying GST on all goods that we order into the country. In any case I have found that as long as I keep shipments below $40.00 customs doesn't seem inteterested in them. Once they pass that total they tend to get flagged and then, as you have mentioned you get to pay their handling fee on top of the GST.

USPS is a lot better than UPS entering the country though. UPS charges you absurd amounts in handling charges for the joy of collecting the money from us for customs.

Armac - thanks for sharing your experience and wisdom.

Cosmo - thanks for the (as always) brilliant customer service. I can't wait till you provide the option to add shopping items to be shipped with a subscription. This will certainly put me over $40 - but it'll be worth it!

I agree on the no rhyme or reason. I spent a summer in the mid 1990s working at the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory near Victoria BC. I bought a truck right before going up there and the dealership sat around for a month and "forgot" to file the paperwork for the license plates.

I was leaving for Vancouver Island in a week or so (once we figured out why no plates had arrived) and they would not be able to get them to me in time. We had them sent to the observatory. The paperwork clearly stated "Arizona License plate for Arizona Registered Vehicle". Apparently, that is a hot import into Canada because there was a GST that the observatory initially paid. Fortunately, they also knew what paperwork I had to file so they could be reimbursed for an obviously wrong tax.
