Ok character concepts/discussion/negotiations can go here. Take your time - I reckon the opening post is around a week and a half away at best.
Players are Joanna, Nevyn, Aaron and probably Lynora. No real classes/races chosen yet - Joanna indicated either sorceror or barbarian.
We'll be using PF Beta rules, with maximum hit points at first level and average gold for your class. You can each use two traits although I'm not a big fan of the "rich parents" one so I'd prefer you not start with stacks of wealth.
Any questions, just let me know.

Ok, I'm thinking I may have to go Dwarven Cleric of Sarenrae with the "Reclaiming your roots" and "Child of the temple" traits....
A dwarf who's father died escaping Kelmarane when he was very young, his mother, in grief went to the temple of Sarenrae and brought him up there....Now after his mother died, he has found an ancient axe in his mother possessions that must have been his fathers....and now he is on his way back to Kelmarane.....

Joana |

Here's my character pitch: halfling barbarian. Either her whole tribe is halflings, descended from a group who escaped from gnoll slavers in the Katapesh wild generations ago and took up their fierce ways to defend themselves, or she was a small child abandoned by the slavers who took her mother because she was deemed too weak to survive the trek to the slave market and was taken in by a human barbarian whose baby had just died. Either way, gnolls are her sworn enemy, and she dreams of the glory of wallowing in the life's blood of the Carrion King. Traits would be Gnoll Killer and possibly Savannah Child.

I'm about halfway through the first adventure - certainly close to being able to start. It looks well suited to PBP play to me.
Halfling barbarian, Dwarven Cleric and Elven Druid all sound good to me. How would it sit with everyone if we aimed to start next monday?
Lynora - how are commitments looking? Will that fit in ok?

Monty Haul |

Monty, do you have a preference on my barbarian's backstory: all-halfling tribe, or adopted by humans? I think I prefer the fierce nomadic halflings myself, but I know I'm probably stepping on all kinds of official Golarion campaign setting stuff. I could go with either one.
I'm happy with either. I guess the halfling foundling raised by humans fits in with my preconceptions better - however either makes sense to me so whichever suits you best.

I prefer a twenty point buy, although could be persuaded if anyone feels strongly about rolling stats.
Ok, I've been playing with options with a character I rolled up. That came out at a 25 point buy. I'll drop the 5 points, and post something up later.....

Nuveril |

She's not quite done yet, but I have a few questions.

Monty Haul |

Are we using the rage point system from the printed Beta or the updated rage powers here?
I would rather go with the Beta rules - however, I do not really follow the rules development threads that much (rulesets arent particularly important to me) so if there are problems you know of and the amended system is designed to fix those - I'm happy to be convinced.
Are you okay with her tribe not worshipping a deity per se but holding to a sort of animist system wherein the spirits of their ancestors inhabit the spirit world around them and those spirits are the source of their shamans' and healers' power?
Absolutely - I prefer that approach to be honest.
Since she wasn't raised by halflings, I gave her her tribe's language of Kelish instead of Halfling.
Sound decision again.

Well, the main difference is that they got rid of the record-keeping with rage points: You just gain rage powers every 2 levels that you can use during your rage. That said, though, seeing how this is a PbP, the record-keeping of rage points won't be such a pain with the slower pace, so if you want to stick with the Beta, I'm fine with it.

Sorry I didn't check in sooner. Real life kinda exploded on me last week. I'm still in. I can get my character made in the next couple days. I haven't downloaded the players guide, so I have no idea on traits. Huh. I'd been leaning towards bard. Most likely human. That's as far as I've gotten.

No hassle - I'm aiming to start on Monday, but it doesnt really matter if people need a little more time.
I'll post some of the campaign-specific traits later, or a synopsis of them anyhow.

lynora |

Okay, I've gotten started on my character now. Should have it done by Monday. Human bard, with the Genie-blood and Freed slave traits.
Having originally been captured by gnoll slavers as a child, she has a special hatred for the beasts. Will have more specifics up later.

Just a heads up, I'm away from Thursday to Tuesday over Easter, so won't be able to post Monday, but will certainly be able to post Tuesday, Young Childers have to be in bed early :)
Don't let that stop you getting started though, I'll be able to jump in, I'm sure.

lynora |

Huh? Now I'm confused. We are talking about this coming Monday right? Cause Easter is next weekend isn't it? Cause that's when my son's spring break is. We'll be going on vacation that week, but I should be able to still check in daily during that time.

Sorry, what day is it? Yes, you are right. I did also just bump my head (no joke, it hurt, a lot). Please ignore my stupid ramblings, and anticipate a period of R&R of 3 or 4 days *next* weekend.....
:)

I hate trying to create a character sheet in a profile. I'm sure I forgot something somewhere.
The dagger in her equipment is to be used as a hunter's knife, for gutting animals, etc. Not that she wouldn't use it as a weapon in a pinch!
Also, her tribe uses a barter system for the exchange of goods so she wouldn't have any coins. Could her excess "starting gold" be in trade goods, such as animal pelts or the like?

Monty Haul |

Hate to poke in uninvited-but I'd love to join seeing as you have only 4 players. At the very least could you keep me in mind as an alternate?
thanks a bunch!
Hi Memento
I've typed/deleted/retyped/redeleted this post so many times... I keep changing my mind. Basically, I'm new to this and am trying to keep the PBP games I run to a small number of players (I am running one with seven which has a tendency to grind to a halt). Having said that, it was initially intended for five players, but one couldnt make it so...why not.
No pressure or anything, but we were hoping to start around about now, so if you can get snappy with a character, that'd be good.
So far we have a barbarian, bard, cleric and druid. It's pathfinder beta rules - 20 point buy for stats, you can have two traits, although I'm not a fan of the 'rich parents' one which gives you 900 gold or something... My profile has bits and pieces about how I run games (I kind of expect one post a day, I'm not super-strict about it, but if we're waiting on you and a day or more goes past, I may well just declare what you do and/or say...) The two PBPs I'm currently running are at:
and
if you want to see how I run things (although bear in mind that I was on holiday for the week in which the second started up, so I dont make an appearance until post fifty or so.
Anything else you need to know, just ask. As I say - the opening post will go up in the next day or so, so be quick with your character. :)

Monty Haul |

Ugh - the website keeps logging me off when I try and post. Cliff notes:
I'm having connection problems and given Easter looming, am going to postpone the opening post until end of easter (Monday morning US east coast time according to my rough understanding of timezones)
Joanna - trade goods sounds good. Hides, dried herbs might be possibilities - happy to go with whatever you think.
Memento - are you still interested? Do you think you'll be set to go by the end of the weekend?
Hopefully this posts ok... :(

![]() |

Monty, after Easter is fine with me, and I think Nevynxxx already said he'd be away Easter weekend. It will give me time to get my character sheet in better condition. The Great PDF Fiasco of 2009 seems to be slowing down the boards right now anyway.
Indeed, I should be back evening time on Tuesday...but don't worry about waiting just for me.
I won't bother posting this in the J1 thread as well, that seems like overkill!

No trouble - take your time over the weekend, the first post will be Monday or Tuesday next week to allow for Easter absenteeism. :)
Any thoughts on race/class/etcetera?

I was considering a swashbuckler-ish character, tho not necessarily the pirates of the Caribbean type.
I thought about making a character similar to R.A. Salvatore's Highwayman character, if you've ever read the book, and was considering monk if you'd allow me to take a feat out of the Ebberon Campaign setting book, i cant remember the exacts of it at the moment and i don't have the book on hand, but to the best of my recollection, it allowed a monk to use a longsword as a monk weapon for the purposes of flurry of blows.

I havent read any Salvatore - nonetheless, swashbuckler sounds good. I'm a little leery of the feat you mention (it sounds rather powerful...plus I like the fact monks are slightly exotic and use 'different' weapons/attacks). I'm not saying no at this stage, but could you post the details? My Eberron campaign book happens to be lent out atm.

Cheers - I think Lynora was going to be busy too. What's the Great PDF Fiasco of 2009?
I presume that asking that question makes me look slightly stupid...

738 posts...sounds like a fiasco.

WHIRLING STEEL STRIKE
[GENERAL]
Through monastic weapon training, you have mastered a
fi ghting style that makes use of an unusual monk weapon:
the longsword.
Prerequisites: Martial Weapon Profi ciency (longsword),
Weapon Focus (longsword), fl urry of blows class
feature.
Benefi t: You can treat a longsword as a special monk
weapon, allowing you to perform a fl urry of blows with it.
the only way i could do this is if it was allowed as a 1st level monk bonus feat.
however, i'm now leaning more towards altering the concept to a fighter or rouge.
EDIT:Another Concept I had was a native from Arcadia, brought here by Chelish slave traders, most likely ranger.

I agree, although presumably they're trying to boost the market share of 4th edition by removing one of it's principal competitors - perhaps they dont really care about eliminating piracy, but rather care more about reducing the visibility of alternatives.

I feel it's a little overpowered for a starting character (I wouldnt be averse to allowing it if someone met the pre-requisites, however I expect that would be a way off).

True.
Although I can understand the point of view, I don't understand the whole "4th is here, stop buying 3rd things" mentality. Surely you keep a bigger market share if you have all of 4th, and most of 3rd edition sales, than if you just have 4th?
That's enough off topic for me though, they have made their decision, and there's sod all we can do about it...
