Scarab Sages

After a long hiatus, my group is picking back up where we left off. We ended Hook Mountain with the party returning to Sandpoint, but making plans to take control of Fort Rannik.

I'll bet dollars to donuts that after the attack on Sandpoint the group will want to stop by Turtleback Ferry/Fort Rannik on their way to Jorgenfist. That means they'll get it into their heads to avoid the Storval Stairs/Plateu altogether, and just head up that river in the Iron Peaks.

Anyone have a similar experience? I'm trolling for ideas to discourage that from happening (or at least to make it as harrowing as the by-land route). I'm certain I can come up with *something*, but I thought I might benefit from others' experience.

So far the only deterrents I have are geographic: waterfalls, river goes underground, cliffs and other mountainous terrain. I've also considered just running the Storval Stairs encounter at some point along the river.
