Community Use Policy and Desktop Wallpapers

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

So I'm not sure if I'm double posting this or not (board may have ate the previous post).

I have a number of wallpapers on my website that I created using images from the blog (I'm fairly certain that all of them are from the blog).
However some of these images have been altered using photoshop.

One wallpaper has a sepia tone background of the Golarion map.

Also some of the images have been cropped so that the image will work for both a 1280x800 as well as 1024x768. I believe that some of the images of the iconics have been resized and or cropped as well.

So would this violate the Community Use Policy?

I'd specifically like input from Vic but KaeYoss I'd like your input as well..

If it is in violation I will gladly remove them.

Here is a link to the wallpapers:

Any Thoughts?

We don't have time to check everything that everybody creates under the policy, and I personally don't have enough familiarity with all of the blog images to even notice if they've been modified. But I can clarify that resizing is fine, so long as it's done proportionally, and it's ok to eliminate white space around images and such. Other modifications, like sepia toning, aren't allowed.

Yeah, I had to take mine down, too. Wallpapers are pretty much impossible under the CUP, unless you do really boring stuff - and who wants that?

Guess I will be taking down the ones that are in violation..

I'm going to keep the ones up that I believe aren't though.

If Paizo is going to limit the nature of wallpapers that can be made and shared by their fans--which have been great, by the way!--then I think they should supply more official wallpapers like they did with Rise of the Runelords.

I know there have been other posts where this has been requested. The usual response seems to be "We're too busy right now." That's OK. I understand both the busyness and the need for the Community Use Policy.

I love Paizo as a company, love their products (especially Pathfinder), and love their community. I would gladly "advertise" for them by using their wallpapers. I also own and proudly wear the Paizo Golem T-shirt.

If Paizo is going to limit what wallpaper artists can do creatively, however, then I think it's high time they step back up to the plate and show our desktops some love! :)

I'm not saying that Paizo fans don't have room creatively to come up with good wallpapers under the CUP, but the fact that they're having to take down some of their hard work makes me sad.

I make my own for my desktop and laptop computers. I use a cityscape that seems appropriate to the month and slap a calendar in the top right corner of it. This way I can get my Paizo fix when I'm on the computer but not looking at the Paizo website. I'm not sure when the last time that happened was, but if it ever did, I'd be ready.

Keep in mind that what Paizo does well is create great settings and adventures .. Id rather they focus on that than flashy wallpaper.

They aren't saying that we can't create these things, just that we respect certain things. If I can't create a great image that complies with the Community Use Policy (CUP)then I shouldn't call myself a graphic designer.

I plan to continue to do great wallpaper(s) but everything will respect Paizo's CUP.

I don't call myself a graphic designer, but that doesn't mean that my wallpapers were crap or that no one liked them. Because people (including some people from Paizo) did like them - either that, or they just said things like "great work" to protect my feelings. Which I doubt, because this is the internet.

I didn't draw or paint pictures myself, because I'm not a painter, but I did arrange them and added what I thought was a witty motto.

And all that is impossible under the CUP, since I cannot even take the latest picture taken from some cover and put a figure - or even a logo - on top of it.

I can understand the need to protect the original art. I'm a photographer and fully understand that need. I can understand limiting desktop wallpapers that are distributed. It essentially violates copyright laws. Only the copyright holder can authorize such changes.

I can understand Paizo not wanting to spend time on wallpapers too. They other products much more vital to spend time on.

BUT, what I can't figure, is why they have not released official banners! Aside from Pathfinder logos, there really is nothing suitable for banners! Best I can figure is resize Seoni and put her next to the Pathfinder logo! lol

And what if you want to use a VERTICAL banner? Really nothing is available at all.

We've asked the art department to create an assortment of banners when they have spare time.
