for all those D&D specialists here. could you recommend a city in Faerun which I could replace for Korvosa? (maybe Westgate?) thanks for your ideas.

Hi Enpeze,

I would not replace any city with Korvosa. That might lead to problems some time in the Future when the replaced city might become a focus in some other adventure you (or any DM from your regular group) might want to play in the future.

I suggest placing Korvosa itself somewhere that seems convenient. The newly placed Korvosa (maybe renamed to New Korvosa.... :)) should be an independent City-State. Thus you don't really need to change much of its History, with the exception of its past regarding Cheliax.

Taking in account the rather "dense" population of the Realms, I personally would opt for placing a more or less bigger Island somewhere in one of the bodies of water, such as the Great Sea or the Trackless Sea. Close enough so that the PCs can reach it, but far enough so that it might not upset any existing political or economic situations of the officially existing countries.

Consider Korvosa's situation:

Former colony of the Infernal Empire of Cheliax (though from before teh time when Chaliax switched from Aroden to Diabolism) located on the former site of Shoanti barbarian homeland, set in a wilderness frontier region. Its population of not even 20.000 is consistent with its role as a bastion of civilisation in untamed wilderness.

So you'll need to find some largely unsettled wilderness region and put Korvosa there. It would be best if you tied it to some order-loving LE empire or other power. Maybe something from the Moonsea region?

How about political and trade connections to Thay which replaces Cheliax? Thay seems evil enough and and at the same time civilized too.

With maybe the exception of rampant diabolism, it really could work:

Before they started their Enclave and Trade deal, they claimed one city in a part of the world that is basically untamed wilderness. Their plan was to develop that city to have a base of operations for... whatever (doesn't have to be revealed now).

But then the Enclaves became the favoured strategy for expansion, and since Korvosa didn't really work the way they wanted, they cut loose their ties and ignored the city henceforth.

I places it in chessnta here is my map

I thought this area fit well with how I wanted to run cotct, it is an area of city states and such an used to be part of the evil, god ruled unthar

sounds close to how it works

The Exchange

I've recently started to run the RotRL-AP for a group already adventuring in Tethyr and now I'm thinking about replacing Korvosa with Darromar, Tethyr's capital. This naturally includes a major rewriting of the AP's background but if you have the excellent "Lands of Intrigue" (free download on the wizards' webpage), you'll find plenty of ideas to adapt those AP's. The best thing, as I see it, is that we will be able to run SD or LoF in the same region so no matter which AP the player's might prefer after having finished the RotRL-AP, I#ll be prepared.

Thanks all for the good ideas.

Regarding the map I think isnt this the 3rd ed map? I always thought Unther has been wiped in the new version. But maybe I am wrong - I am not that specialist in FR canon.

You are right the linked map was from the 3rd edition campaign setting book, and Unther isn't any more after the spell plague.

Sorry didn't know he wanted the new setting

Nothing to be sorry about, that he wanted the new setting was only known after he said it.

Yeah I know very little of the new setting, Don't plan to either. I'll be as helpful as I can with the old one however. The area I placed it in I found a good fit. Matches the placement pretty well, hell knights are an easy add for the area, and it used to be part of an evil empire. The city states also have trade and more then one king, or council or what have ya.

It has long been a fav area of the realms anyhow for me.
