"Edition Wars" the RPG game

Other RPGs

Has anyone heard of the release date of the “Edition Wars” RPG?

Apparently, you get to roll play competing companies and their efforts to create games and capture market share. I'm interested in the online competition(s) mechanics.

Links?

Do you have to crawl through a dungeon of data killing nefarious beasts like the immovable Grognard and the raving Fan Boi? I am really looking forward to the chaos sphere of spells; specifically the 6th level spell Messageboards which allows you to peer into the minds of your consumer base.

Liberty's Edge

I hope this game does better than my childhood recreator called "Backyards & Bicycles"...

I like the new area effect attack "Nerdrage".

Scarab Sages

The release has already been delayed several times, the company seems to be unsure about the direction the game should take, i've read somewhere that basically some designers think the rules should be more "gamist" while other designers tend toward a more "simulationist" appoach.

Oh great. Now all the gamists are gonna get all pissy because you called them gamists.

Scarab Sages

Hey, don't kill the messenger! I just cited what i've read about those delays!

Yes. There is a .pdf being emailed around. Does anyone have it?

Sovereign Court

Module FU4: In Search of the Most Expensive Fan Subscription
After the passing of the great High Wizard, Zygax, the dark masters cut and paste nonsensical mileau elements into a new game in which Charactermasters overthow the gamemaster, relgating him to optional status. Slapping a traditional logo on this otherwise different game, creates the first explosively divisive shockwave, severing the fan base into tiny pockets of refugees, making it even harder to put together a gaming group.

Meanwhile, at the lair of the dark masters... one-by-one the grandiouse digital support tool initiative requirements are being cut, including the rediculously high, originally estimated, subscription rate... while a full year of laughable so-called development time passes and confirms that several lofty statements given at a previous big gaming convention was indeed misleading and premature.

Finally, in a retributive strike turn of events, our local heros and scrappy designer/developers of TOGAME LLC. band together to stave off the attempted monopolistic hostile take-over of the whole gaming genre. The dark masters of XPUD have broken faith with their formerly loyal fan base, and so haphazzardly changed traditional elements of the game, that the people of the kingdom rally behind our local heroes as they preserve and secure the legacy of High Wizard, Zygax, for all ages to come.

Note for the Gamemaster: This module is designed to enable player character miniatures of various editions to beat the crap out of each other on a 1" scale grid. Each PC will use a different ruleset, and each player will need to purchase a complete set of edition books for their respective systems. It is recommended that at least one of each of the following be included: OSRIC 2.0/C&C/1e/v3.5/4e/PRPG. (3PP materials provide +3 bonuses to PCs using them.)

Play proceeds until the players realize that the true winner is TOGAME LLC. Feel free to help other players realize that the winner of the edition wars are 3PPs using the OGL, and the revivication of the traditions, history, and intentions of the game as put forth by the late High Wizard Zygax. If needed, explain that no company should every try to "shut down" the OGL or manipulate 3PPs into a sense of insecurity ever again. Remind the player of XPUD and the dark masters that by alienating a product's fan base after 25+ devoted years, they have committed a crime against the gaming industry, no matter how passionate about the game they appear to be, and regardless of the individual goodness of select employees of the dark master.

Note: any resemblance to actual persons, places or events is purely coincidental.

Liberty's Edge

Typical FU4 sounds awesome but some company marketing person has decided to exclude me because I choose to play 2nd Edition AD&D. When are they going to wake up and think of the fan-base?

I'm looking at the rules .pdf now. I may have to start a PbP, it is actually playable.

Heh. Would have been funnier if it didn't seem overly biased and was just actually making fun of the Edition Wars. Good for a short laugh though!

On the note of the RPG. I completely refuse to play this game because of broken mechanics that just can't be fixed by giving it a new paint job and parent-company. The game needs real balance as well as some fresh ideas to revigorate the franchise.

The Grognard class is unfun! It needs more feats to keep up with the Edition Fanboi class.

I may have just achieved the high score! What did you get?

If anyone listens to The Order 66 Star Wars Saga podcast, the hosts are 2 of the creators, and you can hear them talk about it on and off throughout the last few episodes. It actually sounds quiet fun, particularly if you're someone who can poke fun at the reference material :)
