1st Level Adventures for D&D 4th Edition

4th Edition

Hi!

I would know the adventures that come out for a party of first level and what is your own opinion of the module about the kind of play.
I.e. "Name of the adventure": more roleplay, "Name of the adventure #2": more combat, "Name of the adventure #3": more balanced.

Please! No Spoiler! No bashing at an adventure!

I will begin with a list of adventures for a party of first level:

  • Lands of Darkness #1: The Barrow Grounds by Expeditious Retreat Press
  • In Search of Adventure by Goodman Games
  • Dungeon Crawl Classics #53: Sellswords of Punjar by Goodman Games
  • Dungeon Crawl Classics #54: Forges of the Mountain King by Goodman Games
  • Dungeon Crawl Classics #55: Isle of the Sea Drake by Goodman Games
  • Dungeon Crawl Classics #59 by Goodman Games
  • Master Dungeons M1: Dragora's Dungeon by Goodman Games
  • H1—Keep on the Shadowfell by Wizards of the Coast

Thanks!
dragonvan

Hi, Van.

Here are the ones I'm familiar with:

  • Dungeon Crawl Classics #54: Forges of the Mountain King by Goodman Games -- Lives up to the DCC motto of "1st edition feel." Meaning a dungeon, lots of traps and monsters, not very dynamic (so far). I'm running it for my live group. The encounter design is a bit slipshod vis-a-vis the DMG guidelines and I've had to make some modifications to avoid outright TPKs.
  • Master Dungeons M1: Dragora's Dungeon by Goodman Games -- This one is just as lethal, but more developed; I'm running it as a PBP. There are NPCs you're not supposed to kill; lots of RP opportunity if the characters live long enough. Note that with both Goodman Games, the skill DCs need to be adjusted downward to reflect the errata.
  • H1—Keep on the Shadowfell by Wizards of the Coast -- well, you're in my pbp of this one, so no comment!

You're also missing the 1st-level adventures in the back of the DMG and the front of the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting, but I haven't played or run either of those.

Hope this helps,
Pat

Menace of the Icy Spire - DDI

Just flipped through it, if I read it I will report back.

This is a little off-topic, but I have had ZERO problems converting Paizo stuff over to 4E.

Golarion is an amazing setting and translates very well into 4E.

Goodman's stuff has always been a bit hack-n-slashy for my tastes, although I really appreciate Harley Stroh's work. He did some great stuff for 3.5 Blackmoor.

I'd start with D0, D1 and D 1.5.

This has come up before but the 1st lvl starter adventure, Halls of the Kobolds in the DMG is ok, you'll need to bring a bit of interesting roleplaying options into it.

For Example:-
* Farmers in the nearby area have asked for the Lord to Deal with this threat as the Kobolds have become more active or a farmers wife and children have been taken by the kobolds and has beseached the lord to hire people to rescue them.

The Lord may put up a poster for applicants to present themselves to him at the Keep. Run a roleplay encounter where the lord can ask whether the PC's are good enough to undertake such a task. Characters can use History, Arcane,Diplomacy, Bluff skills to 'big themselves up'.
Have the lord offer a bounty based on their success's in convincing him.
It's not a bad advenure but totally misses out the top of the old halls which I had to throw in myself (not a big problem but a shame it was ignored).
There are a couple of sub-missions in the adventure that can add a little flavour as the poeple hear that the PC's are going to the halls and approach them with additional gains in the Halls if their tasks are done.

I've run it, though it's not a level 1 adventure, level 3 if I recall right. It's not too long, and has a very nice feel to it and was fun. The fights are dynamic, and the monsters are very cool. I enjoyed it from the DM side and as far as I know my players did as well.

Are they anybody that take a look at the Lands of Darkness #1: The Barrow Grounds by Expeditious Retreat Press?

Rats! There goes all my fun!

No, seriously, I looked at several elements: The H series, the material in Dungeon and Dragon Web-zines, and what was in the DMG and FRCG.

I guess it's a me-ism, but I can't leave well enough alone! So, I just used the guidelines in the DMG - threw together a series of encounters, decided which ones would be encounters, traps and whatnot, and went from there. I find that if I do my own crafting I have a much better grasp of the story I want to tell, the characters, etc. than if I take a pre-write and run that.

I think, however, that I can turn the stuff both in the DMG and in the FRCG into something pretty solid, but I'd end up changing it quite a bit.

I think I should consider the building of a whole adventure. It would be my first experience at a adventure builder.
