Side Trek for Burnt Offerings, anyone?

Rise of the Runelords

I'm just about ready to start up Burnt Offerings here soon, and while reading over the other people's posts, I wondered what might be usable as a mini-side trek for the group.

Once the sheriff in town departs, and the group remains to keep the citizens calm, I got to thinking that might be the time to run a small side adventure in town. Perhaps a small group of traveling Varisian's arrives to visit Risa at her tavern, only to have one of them become accused of murder.

The party has to discover who was killed, as well as who really murdered the deceased, and why.

But that's as far as I've gotten on my own. Any further ideas from my fellow DM's?

Uhm... maybe I'm not understanding things but the question of "who was killed" is throwing me off. If they don't know who was killed, how do they know anybody actually was killed?

Or do you mean the deceased is a complete stranger that nobody knows or can identify?

Sorry for the bit of confusion.

The deceased is another traveller, that nobody in town knows. He was staying at one of the other inns, after arriving in Sandpoint a day or so after the goblin attack.

If the PC's check about the town, they'll discover that the victim's friends had left a day or so earlier, before his body is discovered.

I had considered him being a con-man, who's latest attempt at a con got him murdered when it backfired on him.

With my group, I had Gressel Tenniwar hire the PCs to retrieve some crates of spices from another tribe of goblins in the area.

The story he gave was that one of his shipments was raided by the goblins. In reality, the Sczarni raided a caravan and when they accomplished that task, a group of goblins attacked them right after and took everything.

It was a nice little twist to hire the "Heroes of Sandpoint" to retrieve stolen goods.

That's perfect. A nice little side adventure that the party can handle, and also get them to realize that this sleepy seaside town has more of a darker side than they'd imagined. :)

Hummm. Yes. I had been considering using something with one of the other goblin tribes in the area. The PC's will have to wait until the sheriff returns, but that'll be after the Glassworks problem is over with.

Thanks, DmRrostarr. Consider this idea stolen.

No problem, steal away. I used one of the dungeons from the Shatterguard module as my basis...

Spoiler:
Two Side Treks that are possible just using the information given to you in the beastiary involve the Attic Whisperer and the Goblin Snake. Think about using the death of the girl in the mill pond as a reason for the whisperer to be created and then the goblin snake can be terrorizing the junkpiles, reinforcing the goblins' salvaging efforts.
Scarab Sages

Foxglove hunting trip is an excellent side trek adventure opportunity.

I am running into the hunted forest in whisperwood.

Basically Foxglove decks out the party with light horses and wants to go hunting with them. After pestering and hero worshipping the heroes he announces that he must go to his manor once they get to the turn off... shortly afterwards the inn is in sight.

My players were incredibly curious about Chopper's Isle. If you take a look at Denek's story hour, he did some pretty cool stuff with investigating Chopper's old house. Search for the words, "The Mystery of Chopper’s Island" and check it out.

I borrowed it for my group, with some skill checks to get up and down the cliffs, and it worked really well.

Keep in mind that

Spoiler:
the first part of Rise of the Runelords #2 is a murder investigation, so running one as a sidetrek in Burnt Offerings and then getting to another one in the next adventure might seem like overkill, just in terms of pacing.

I guess it depends on how often you guys play - if it takes you long enough, it might not matter.

Liberty's Edge

In my campaign I had a few Scarzni thugs take advantage of Sheriff Hemlock's absence to try and rob the cash box at the Rusty Dragon by staging a bar fight. The original idea was for the PCs to track the thieves to their hideout in warehouse near the docks, but my players surprised my by trapping the thugs in the inn before they could get away with the goods.

In any case, it's a great way to set up a relationship with Ameiko, and maybe a way to set up Jubrayl as a pseudo-antagonist behind the scenes, which is what I did.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions

My campaign got derailed so it never got started, but lately, events have calmed down enough in my life I'm trying to get it going again.

Hopefully I can link up with enough people to get some sort of group together.

I wanted to try to do something with Jubrayl Vhiski but none of my players bit on the hook at all. I may still have him approach the party rogue (who has been scouting out the town while deputized...but not taking anything yet.) If you've got a larcenous rogue or a carouser in your group you might be able to do the same.

I'm doing everything possible to (gently) tempt my PCs to sin...since it comes into play later in the AP. I've got one each heavily mortgaged for gluttony/lust, sloth, and greed. Unfortunately, the cleric is proving to be a real goody-goody...but wrath is brewing for her, I think. As gruesome as it's getting I think she's ready to lose her temper and start a pogrom against the gobbos. I can't wait until Skinsaw and Hook Mountain. I know she'll lose it then.

So, maybe side-treks focused around temptation?

Thanks for the ideas! I'm prepping my game for my next turn as DM of our group and i was planning on finishing the AP at a higher level overall so, ideas on helping that are always good :)

I haven't read Burnt Offerings yet so, if i have something to add later on, i will.
