Some Questions About Magnimar (Spoilers Aplenty!)

Rise of the Runelords

Greetings All,

My industrious PCs are currently in-between Burnt Offerings and The Skinsaw Murders. They have been dispatched to Magnimar to deliver Tsuto Kaijitsu and Lyrie Akenja to the Justice Court for their crimes against Sandpoint. They were also escorting Ameiko Kaijitsu as Sandpoint's representative in this matter (and so she may help deal with the 'red tape' of bringing a noble to trial).

The PCs just arrived at the end of our last session, and tomorrow night we pick up with them testifying to the Justice in charge of the trial regarding the events in Sandpoint. They will then have a chance to go shopping for new gear and explore the 'Big City'.

My questions are:
1) Where is the Justice Court located in Magnimar? Is it part of the Usher's Hall, or is it part of the Pediment Building (and if so, where is the Pediment Building)?

2) Where would the Kaijitsu holdings in Magnimar's Summit area be located (what district, specifically)? Would it just be a townhouse or something larger, as Ameiko is supposed to have some family here (presumably in the jewelry business)?

Any official word on these would be most helpful. Also if there are any other questions that could help flesh out Magnimar a bit more for DMs out there, or any homebrewed content anyone would like to share, please post them as well.

Thanks, as always, for the help! :)

The Justice Court isn't a building, it's a group - like a king's court. This group of judges operates out of the Pediment Building, which is near Usher's Hall (PF#2 pages 58 & 61). It does not have a tag on the map, but I'd say its that big gray building halfway between tags 6 and 8 on the locations map of the Magnimar web supplement.

Totally up to you. I'd either pick out a fancy townhouse for them in the Marble District, select one of the smaller walled estates along the cliffs of Vista, or maybe move them to one of the manses on Silvershore. Your call. Personally I'd probably give them a big old town house, or series of interconnected townhouses, overlooking Underbridge.

Just make sure you have that web supplement - it fixes the busted map that slipped out in the first printing. Aside from that, totally, I'd love to hear what other folks have done with the city! Hope this helped!

Thanks for swooping in fast and setting a poor DM straight, Wes!

Indeed he is! :)

Now I can stage things in the city better, having these reference points to go from.

I think the PC testimonials will get pushed back a session so they can get out into the city and get some new gear. That seems appropriate, it being right before Christmas and all(and my group is doing the present thing tonight anyway)! :P

Any thoughts of the Justice overseeing he trial being Ironbriar?

Probably Lord Justice Argentine and all ten remaining justices oversee Ironbriar's trial. Ironbriar's trial is likely internalized and takes place behind closed doors. In the end, he simply disappears with the court remaining tight-lipped about the verdict. What happens to him becomes a matter of speculation for a while. While some assume the Justice Court went easy on their own and exiled him, others - more in the know - suspect that Ironbriar faces some new and more severe punishment deep below the Pediment Building for betraying both his oaths as a justice and the entire Court.

I meant before Ironbriar is outed. In theory, he could rule in Tsuto's favor were he the judge of his and Lyrie's case.

I think he means the trial of Tsuto and Lyrie being overseen by Ironbriar.

EDIT: Ninja'd!

I used Justice Ironbriar to send captured Orik to Fort Rannick.

Ironbriar brought to justice? Boooooooring.

My players killed him, didn't recognise him, decapitaded him and brought his head back to collect the bounty for some murderous cult leader. When they put the head on the table and asked what they'd get for it, I just had to let the clerk reply: "20 to life, or the gallows, depending on how our other justices decree"

My group has just finished Skinsaw, but when they first arrived in Magnimar they had kept the head of the Bandit found in the Misgivings.

So of course, which justice happened to be the one who met with the group to give them the reward? yep Ironbriar of course.

It was hilarious when the PC's started spilling their guts about coming to town to hunt down a connection with the Skinsaw murdurer, and what they were planning to do in Magnimar - and having the key to Aldern's townhouse. They asked Ironbriar for directions to it!! :-)

So it was a very good excuse to have the faceless stalkers in the townhouse - and the PC's were far from surprised when the discovered it was Ironbriar at the sawmill.

To answer the question (and my apologies for the delay) - yes, I am using Ironbriar as the judge presiding over Tsuto and Lyrie.

I've drafted up a questionnaire that I will put to each PC individually. Some of these questions are designed 'officially' to ascertain the character/qualtiy of each person as a witness in the trial - but they will also allow Ironbriar to get some idea of what they can do if he has to 'deal' with them in the future. ;)

My goal is to have the PCs feel that he is a cold but fair Justice, especially when they see the harsh sentence passed on Tsuto. I plan on sending Tsuto to the Hells, and Lyrie to Fort Rannick (per the idea floated on the boards here). I also like the idea floated on the boards of Ironbriar actually being Tsuto's father, and may go with that if it feels right for my campaign.

I might use Lyrie as another traitor in Fort Rannick, maybe even tying her to the Hag coven in some way. On the other hand, I don't want the party getting in the mindset of 'take no prisoners' either, so I may just have that information show up as a lead, but have Lyrie gone before the PCs get there. She could then hook back up with Tsuto for a late-campaign revenge plot once the PCs have conveniently forgotten about them... :)
