I just bumped into this last night at my local "Borders". They must have a deal with WotC, because the artwork in more than one place is not similar to the monster manual, it is *exactly* the same.
In any case, it is all fluff about monsters, but the fluff all corresponds to 3.5 canon so it seemed a great way to get a hobby related thing to my young sons.
The price at Amazon cannot be beat either, for a hardcover...

The publisher doesn't have a *deal* with Wizards—the publisher *is* Wizards. Mirrorstone is their juvenile/young adult imprint. They have a whole series of Practical Guides.

This....is cool. My 7.5 yr old son keeps trying to read my Monster Manual. This is right up his alley.
(sigh) Yet another Xmas gift to buy...restraint OUT the window!

My son has read both the Practical Guide to Monster and the Practical Guide to Dragons. They have a practical guide to dragon riding out that looks pretty neat. They seem geared towards the Dragonlance campaign setting.
For giving to someone else's kids (particularly if you don't know the parents), I would recommend the Practical Guide to Dragons. The Monster book has some pictures of undead that some parents might not be happy with. My son enjoyed them both.

As much as I'd like to get my kids into gaming, I let them chose their hobby paths. About the closest thing to gaming my kids are in are Heroclix & Transformers 3D cards from Wizards for my 7 year old son (not the games, just the figures, as he is a fan of both) & Bella Sara for my 10 year old daughter. Again, not the game she just like horses + she likes collecting the cards.
I will admit I've thumbed through those books & they seem like a neat way to introduce little ones to gaming. Put the terms in a "Harry Potter" kinda way of thinking.
