Yoinking the Gold Goblin

My player's just about to open a casino, so I'm thinking of yoinking the Goblin's layout and mechanics of running it for these purposes. She'll essentially be buying the building that Vancaskerkin was in, absent the back story. (She's a mid level hero, not a pariah.)

So, what would you have this building cost?
What would furnishing the place cost?
What would the loan terms be like and from whom?
What tests of skill would she face in getting the place up and running?
What complications should ensue?

Details for 1. & 3. are covered in the beginning of Children of the Void.

2. Shouldn't be too much more than 3.

4. is really somewhat covered by Shadow in the Sky - a lot of the encounters opposing Saul can easily be encounters to knock out the new competition. Also a lot of the checks required to give bonuses to the initial checks. (Children of the Void has a much better long term system for profit).

5. That is entirely up to you :) But remember what lies beneath (even excluding the you know what.)


I'm actually thinking of what the answers to these questions would have been before the start of Shadow in the Sky, too.

Well it basically says that if they sell it after all the back taxes and loans and everything the best they can get out of it is 20,000 gp. That makes me assume thats with the money Saul owed and whatnot, its more than likely 40,000 gp for the building at least. However I would place a loan sharkless Goblin at 24-30K gp at most and probably lean more towards the 22-24K range. But thats just me at least for buying it as is, so to speak.


And when they get a manager with a +8 modifier taking ten on his monthly checks... they get 60 gp profit per month, 720 gp per year and pay off 20K in 28 years.

Am I doing something wrong here?

Sounds like a pretty standard 30 year mortgage to me. LOL Sounds like a crappy deal doesn't it, but consider this..

In SD the party acquires the gold goblin without any financial investment. What do they get? A crappy 720 gp a year? Well that's also a central base of operations, a place to fall back to within Riddleport, and it makes money to boot! Not wholly bad. Not to mention that the place turns a profit monthly that is ten times the salary of a skilled laborer. Just my 0.02.

True enough... I'm not questioning its use in the module.

I'm just wondering if that's a fair expectation of return for a player starting a casino like this in the first place. (My player's going to start it as a "temple" to the goddess of good luck.) Hrm. Perhaps this becomes a better deal if she gets a deal on the building or tax incentives as an urban renewal project... Or maybe 30 year mortgages are chicken feed to deities...

Something more to take in considerations are the following thoughts:

  • The goblin has other means of making money as it was the cover for nefarious stuff underneath
  • Also there is the whole undeground fightclub and extra expensive bar area for vips
  • and finally the way I read it, it has good location and can quickly become popular place for any sort of back room deals, and also can serve as an inn/tavern with its guest rooms.


All in all if you can staff it I think it could legtamately be 3 or 4 businesses each making money and turning an even heftier profit if set up correctly.... but that's as is :P


the DMG 2 has some nice info on business start up costs and upkeep and all that jazz

the numbers are pretty close to what is being bandied about here too

Actually, the casino seemed like it was High/High/High in its categories, which entailed a 100K building cost for a business with 20 employees plus.
