I have it, and was waiting for the strategy guide to play it. But I'll be diving into Persona 4 first. Bump this thread in a month and I'll give you my opinion.
Also, not all reviews said it was horrible. There were some technical/graphical glitches (moreso on the PS3 I think), but it's a long, deep strategy RPG. A gamer I know casually (works at Gamestop) was really into it, last time I checked. So YMMV...

Ok, I've played some of this, and I'm cautiously optimistic I've made a good choice.
Pros: Some very sweet graphics; not overly linear (i.e., you can wander and grind to your heart's content); save anywhere (and you should save frequently!); pause button (not always a given); cool character designs; not the same old, same old turn-based party system; tons of optimization choices for your PCs; numerous "guild tasks" you can do for nice rewards; side quests can be interesting (some early ones are quite easy).
Cons: some texture pop-in (alleviated somewhat if you save the game to your X360 hard drive, which I strongly recommend); voice-acting uneven (overall pretty good, actually); main character is sort of a doofus (but you really travel w/ others, who are by and large pretty cool); generic heavy metal music adds little to the game.
These are my early impressions. I've heard there's a lot of fighting throughout the first half of the game, and the plot comes out more in the 2nd half.
The initially confusing thing is the battle system. You will form "unions" of PCs & NPCs, and there are a gajillion formations to learn for optimal combat situations. Each union is headed up by a "leader" (e.g., your main character). The tricky but enjoyable part of combat is that, when you head into a fight w/ an enemy, you will see a single example (or a few milling around) of an enemy type. But that "single" exemplar is just a placeholder for any number of enemy unions, each of which can hold variable numbers of enemies. So you can't be too cocky or one battle will quickly end up w/ a Game Over! (Hence my note to save often) If you can keep up the wins, you get battle chains, which in turn increase the rewards.
So, all in all, I'm quite happy w/ it. Of course, I can't say for you that it's worth the money, as I don't know your likes and I don't know your financial situation. But I recommend it w/ a strategy guide (I can't imagine a JPRG w/out one, unless you don't care about missing out on tons of things you otherwise would never know about).

I did run out and rent the game on Saturday....and was just not impressed with it. It really seemed like a "ho-hum" effort on the part of Square, maybe its just because I have been spoiled by Final Fantasies for years. I might wait until I find Last Remnant for $40 or less. Thank you for your review though!
