EN bestiary questions

Second Darkness

having read through the freshest PFAP bestiary, I encounterd some searious questions.

1)about the Deep Crow... was that really nececery? I mean, the monster is a joke. it was never really supposed to be taken that seariously. at first glance I thought you were kidding- but it actually was the Penny Arcade critter- it felt out of place, somehow.

2)are there mothman or mothmen? because, if the mothman is a single legendry cretuer of 6 CR it will be really wierd.

3) nit a question per say, but still: I love the Omox Deamon! a great refreshment to the endless hordes of "normal" deamons!
I actually consider to add him into my STAP campign- does anyone have a clear idea when will the best time be for that?

a great bestairy, by the way. loved most of it.

Yes it was necessary; we're fans of Penny Arcade, and the deep crow's a cool monster. It's also sort of a special occasion monster too. We'll probably not be using it in any adventures or anything, but really; it stands up as well, if not better, than a lot of classic D&D monsters like the gelatinous cube or the rust monster...

My preference is that it's a race. A very enigmatic, strange, and unusual race; enigmatic enough that folk aren't sure if there's one or not. If there IS only one... I suspect it has some sort of phoenix rise from the ashes type thing; that once one die, another one rises to take its place. I'd doubt one would ever see more than one mothman at a time, thoguh, no matter what.

What do you mean by "normal" demons? Humanoid? Because there's a lot of nonhumanoid demons out there... particularly in Green Ronin's Book of Fiends. The best point, I suspect, for adding omoxes is probably the last adventure.

Actually, I was totally unaware of Penny Arcade and thought the Deep Crow was a great monster! Now that I'm looking around their site I have a deep seated need to get Stalagmen. What a great idea! I imagine a herd of them lying in ambush and totally overwhelming a drow war party. Basically, the little buggers would be the bane of all other Darklanders.

Really? If it felt out of place it's probably only because it comes from a popular modern source. As for it being a joke or not being serious, I'm not buying that. I'm pretty strict about the monsters I let into the bestiary (sure, a few wonky ones have slipped through) but on the whole it's very important to me that the creatures we present draw off of myth, folklore, literature, or classic fantasy tropes. The look and back story for the deep crow as presented by Penny Arcade feels VERY D&D, with its obvious vulnerabilities and intimidating habitat. I don't believe that monsters for roleplaying games need to adhere to a level of high seriousness - we'd be out some of the most noteworthy creatures in the MM if Gary Gygax didn't just pull them out of a bag of cheep plastic toys and gave them silly names after all. However, to assuage your concerns, the deep crow is a one-time thing. That is to say, we have permission from PA to publish it once. We've got permission to do a few other beasties coming down the line from groups and estates other than PA, though, so heads up.

I like the idea that no one knows. They're probably a race, but if they are, they keep very well hidden. They also work well as just a single entity. The abilities are drawn directly from urban legends about the creature. If those don't seem freaky enough, there's some folks in West Virgina that might have a few stories for you.

Yay, we got one! Cool cool, glad you liked it. This guy is pretty much there to fill in for creatures like the alkilith to serve as minions of Jubilex. He was originally ordered to be one of a new race of sentient ooze people, but when the art came in, it screamed fiend... and you can never have too many demons.

I actually referd to the deamons from the monster manual. they are cool and very Demonic, of course, but my players know their stat blocks by hurt. when I want them to fight something as grand as a 12 CR Deamon I want them to be surprised and Omox is just my style.

Mr. Schnider (sorry if I misspelled), I really liked the bestairy, it was better then the most of them (and that means a lot, since the rest were great too). the elves-cathulhu things (can't recall their names right now) were great, and the mothman inspired me too.

Yeah, that does suck. Fortunately fiends are both pretty much me and James's favorite kinds of beasties so we've got plenty more coming for ya! In fact, expect an all new type of fiend showing up in Pathfinder #19.

Yay! Glad it worked for ya! I hope we get the chance to do a lot more fleshwarps down the line, they're gross (especially the halfling one).

The way I know when an article has done its job is when I immediately want to set pencil to paper and draw it out - the fleshwarping article did that. Well done!

The name Deep Crow is Penny Arcade's copyright (and is noted as such in the volume's credits). Folks are welcome to use it in their games, and the stats are totally open, but I'd advise other publishers not to try and make use of the name without first getting Penny Arcade's permission. As for us, we have an agreement with the guys over at PA to present it once 'cause we all thought I'd be cool. So that's the extent of our plans. Sure I bet folks could go around and around on the legaleses on this, but really everyone at PA was Super Cool on this and it turned out great, so I'd hate to see this turn into a headache for them.

Was that a typo or just you being very clever?

I'm sure Gary Gygax would have loved the monsters you guys have put in the PF bestiary(s). Ik I do.

Anything from Goblins - Life Through Their Eyes? This is my favorite D&D comic and Mr. Hunt comes up with some awesome stuff in the game that I'd love to have stats for in my game.

Hunh, this is actually the first time I've seen it. This requires more investigation...

Back off Jacobs! I'm reading this for work. Yoda8myhead said it was cool.

Personally, when I opened up the beastiary and saw the Deep Crow, I burst out laughing. Not because it was ridiculous or anything, but because it was pretty awesome. The Deep Crow was one of my favorite random things from PA, so I was tickled pink when I saw stats for it. I'm going to try to find a good time to spring this on my gaming friends.

I sense a blood vulenrable shape shifting companionable floating sphere coming....

on a more searious tone, most of the creatures in goblinscomic are taken from Fiend Folio, which, IIRC, was edited by Mr. Jacobs.

Got to add another vote for the deep crow being a cool monster. Having said this I hadn't heard of penny arcade before so that might help. I think its a real shame that you don't plane on using it again as it is a really cool, unique underground beastie. Is there no circumstance in which you would consider having one feature in an adventure? They just seem like to cool a monster to never officially use in an adventure.

Also I'd like to voice my support for more fleshwarps. Particularly the ones mentioned as too dangerous to keep. I'd love to see what flesh warping would do to a neothelid. I've got some pretty fiendish ideas for it myself (cackles insanely). I particularly liked the Ghonhatine. Good work as ever Mr. Schneider.

Gasp! Splutter!

You *haven't* read Goblins?!?

When I DM I alternate wearing your goblin shirt and this goblin shirt. I actually thought Goblins might have inspired Burnt Offerings a bit... wow.

Inspired? Thunt Goblins would consider Pathfinder Goblins to be... well... hideously dangerous stupid maniacs. And Pathy Goblins would consider Thunt Goblins to be... boring and overly cautious, I suppose. :)

Inspired as in a "Hey, Goblins can be pretty cool." sort of way.
