Or, I want an OGL changeling, darnit!

Half Doppelganger:
• +2 to Wisdom, -2 to Charisma. Half doppelgangers are insightful and perceptive, but suffer from a lack of defined self image.
• Half doppelgangers are humanoids with the shapeshifter subtype.
• Medium size.
• A Half-doppelganger’s base land speed is 30 feet
• Control Shape is always a class skill for Half doppelgangers
• +1 to Will saves vs. Mind affecting effects. Half doppelgangers inherit some of their parent’s resistance.
• +2 Natural armor bonus
• +2 Racial bonus on bluff and disguise checks.
• Alter Self (SP): A half doppelganger may use alter self at will, to assume any medium sized humanoid form. The duration that the half doppelganger may maintain an alternate shape is unlimited. (But see below). When using the Alter Self ability, the half doppelganger receives a +10 circumstance bonus to disguise checks.
• Focus on Form: Half Doppelgangers have a slightly harder time maintaining their shapes then their parent. A half doppelganger will revert to their normal form if they fail a control shape roll with the following DCs:
o Sleeping: DC 5
o Taking damage: (Damage taken – 10) DCs of zero and below are automatic successes
o Dazed: DC 10
o Stunned: DC 15
o Staggered: DC 20
o Unconscious/below 0 HP: 25
• Preferred Class: Rogue
• Level Adjustment: +1

You could call it a doppeling. Or a melter.

Thought about calling them 'morphs' Just wondering if I should give them something of a blue tint to their skin in their description, kind of as a homage to Mystique.

What you descibe is a +0 starter race with at will alter self that has an unusual fail component. I think for +1 ECL, it works for me to take that out. If you're concerned about the huge bonus to Disguise, and this is to balance that, drop the bonus to +5 or +8?

I like it by the way.

Thank you varinor!

I'm still working on the fluff part, I think I do better at mechanics rather than fluff.

I chose the +1 LA because they essentially have unfetted use to alter self, the Focus on Form trait might irritate people, as it does toss in a die roll now and again, and assesses a 'skill point tax' but I believe it is a good balancing. Since sleeping is a non-stressful situation, I'd allow the player to take 10 on that. The morphs are isolated, because they -know- at some point they're going to slip.

The Shapechanger subtype is not as powerful as the Outsider type, but does provide proficiency in simple weapons (as opposed to Martial)

By emulating Alter Self, the half doppelganger gains the ability to pick up traits of the creature being emulated.

  • In a OGL setting that means flight/swimming/claws/natural armor etc.

  • In Pathfinder Beta, that means a 'always on' +2 to strength, scent, low light vision, etc.

Pathfinder Beta, I'd call them a ECL 0 race, but I pegged them as a ECL +1

  • If you can get a hold of the old Dragon Star Galatic Races they had a +0 Dopple race that someone in my party is using

Doppels. The big difference is that they get alter self three times per day.
