Advice re Will saves

My 12th level rogue in a high-danger campaign (Rappan Athuk) keeps falling prey to magical attacks calling for Will saves.

I'm looking for something to help improve his Will save, or that otherwise helps protects his mind from enchantments and the like. E.g., the mindvault from MIC seemed kind of appealing, but too expensive for a 1/day item.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Perhaps you can find someone to make a magic item with the resurgence spell...allows one saving throw reroll.

Of course if you are looking for a non-magical solution try to find a way to become an undead creature..... :)

1) An item that provides an enhancement bonus to Wis (either a periapt of Wisdom or a custom headband, helmet, or ring) can boost Will saves

2) An item that grants a protection from chaos/evil/good/law effect will prevent possession or the exercise of mental control for the duration of the effect

3) Armor with the slippery mind ability from DMG II (make a second saving throw the round after failing a save against an enchantment spell or effect; +45,000 gp) is a bit too expensive for a 12th level character, but might be something to consider later on

I don't know about items, but when you get a chance for a feat (and assuming you take the Slippery Mind rogue class feature), you may want to look at the Savvy Rogue feat from Complete Scoundrel (page 80). Among other cool benefits, it grants a +2 competence bonus on the secondary save of Slippery Mind. (It also enhances Crippling Strike, Defensive Roll, Opportunist, and Skill Mastery.)

If you're already level 12, your next feat is pretty far away though since you just got one. (Unless you opt to spend one of your rogue bonus abilities on a feat at level 13. If you don't have Slippery Mind, you'll want to get it first.)

Alternatively, try to keep your rogue hidden/at distance and rely on ranged attacks/duck and run attacks...

Potions of Protection from Evil and/or getting the party cleric to cast Magic Circle vs. Evil might help against some charms/compulsions.

Thank you everyone! I appreciate you taking the time to give me some great ideas.

I'm surprised no one mentioned a Cloak of Protection +1 through +5.

Alternatively, I once played with a guy who had horrible Will saves, and he got a fancy hat that added a Resistance Bonus to his Will saves. It was about 1/3 cheaper than the Cloak of Resistance. Might even be able to get the DM to allow a non-Resistance type bonus to Will Saves so the cloak and hat stack. Maybe Insight or Luck or even Sacred/Profane. There's also a feat that lets you use Cha instead of Wisdom for Will Saves. That might help if you're a Low Wis/High Cha rogue.

You might even consider multiclassing in Ninja (+2 to Will Saves if you still have a Ki reserve) and/or Spellthief (good Will Saves), or some other Will-heavy, skill-heavy type class or PrC. (Cloistered Cleric? Monk? Archivist? Bard? Druid?) You'll probably lose some BAB and skill points, but possibly gain some Sneak Attack or Sudden Strike damage.

Along the way, did you ever take Iron Will? At +2, it's a hard one to pass up. I just leveled my rogue/fighter to 9, and found that since I already had what I wanted (Spring Attack), boosting Will saves was in order. I took the feat.

Another possibility is begging a party caster to hit you with Owl's Wisdom in key encounters (+4 to Wisdom = +2 to Will Saves). That is a bit of a pain though.

Or buy potions of Owl's Wisdom.

The feat you describe is Force of Personality from Complete Adventurer.

Indomitable Soul out of the PHB2 is pretty good too. On Will saves vs. mind-affecting and fear effects, it lets you roll two d20s and take the better result.

I just bought him a cloak +5 and I'm gonna give him Iron Will. That should help keep those mind flayers and ghosts out of his head.
