Is there a way to make Media Player play .mp4 files? I only ask because a show I watch was release in this format and I can't watch.

No matter where I go I can't find an answer...google-fu is weak.

Any help is appreciated.

What is the file extension of the show--is it a .mp4? If so, you can download the free Quicktime players for PC and watch it that way (I assume you are a PC user; if you have a Mac iTunes, FrontRow or QT will play the video).

MPEG-4, and yes I am a PC user.

From Windows Support. I don't know if that helps.

iTunes 8 will only play the audio portion on a PC; you need some extra codec-magic to play the video on a windows machine.

Well, that I did not know.

Thanks.

I've always been a big fan of Winamp, rather than Windows Media Player. With Winamp, you should be able to go to the Winamp site and download a free plug-in that will provide the codec for whatever file you want to play (I have not verified the truth of this statement vis-a-vis .mp4's though).

VLC rocks it, although it has "issues" decoding subtitles from .mp4 containers. Media Player Classic isn't a bad alternative either. If you have your heart set on playing .mp4 files in media player, you could always go looking for the proper codec (ffdshow will do it).

I'd just like to give my vote to the VLC media player too. It'll also play any .mov movies so you don't need QuickTime either.
