Take it just a step further ... we have machines that we can operate by thought (the arm in question, and I remember reading of work on other computers and such). What if we could extend the technology to cell phones (and implant said phones)? Wouldn't this essentially be the same as actual telepathy?
Just a thought.

This is actually not a completely new technology. A number of scientists have placed electrodes in the brains of chimps in past experiments and the electrodes took the electrical impulses from the chimps brains and turned them into instructions for robotic arms. It took some time to calibrate the system of course so that the input was properly processed but purely mental control over electronic systems is definitely pretty close or even here. As far as the implanted cell phone idea/telepathy idea goes, that will be a bit more difficult since this technology is reading electrical impulses akin to nervous system signals that would ordinarily control muscles and speech is a great deal more complex, and would thus require more wiring and more sophisticated detection capabilities to read thoughts and convert them to electric impulses. It can be done, most likely, but it will take more development. Also, we would need to develop a method of thinking so that we don't reveal too much in such a telepathic conversation or reveal thoughts we did not intend to vocalize.
