LHC: Countdown to Destruction

So Tomorrow CERN(European Organization for Nuclear Research) is set to fire the Large Hadron Collider (LHC)(For more info click here). Which according to many scientists, will let us see how matter behaved during the Big Bang.

So I see this going many differnt ways:

1)Nothing happens

2)Gain a new understanding of the universe, and usher in a golden age for humanity

3)The machine works, but causes the destruction of the world!

4)We become trapped in a quantum singularity, but since time and space are distorted we don't notice

I'm pulling for 3...

What are thoughts and opinions on your pending doom?

I go with the points one to three:

First: Nothing happenes.
Then, we get a new understanding of the universe, but don't get in the golden age, for the world is already destroyed.

Let's see...the last time scientists did something like this we got the Atomic Bomb for our troubles...

Oh, but nuclear power has been such a great counter-balance to that. *sigh*

My vote: This will actually be the Big Bang. A self-fullfilling time paradox.

EDIT: It seems they won't actually start collisions until the end of the month.

eh 2 or 3

or we could be shoved into an alt reality ....that might be interesting.

Hopefully one where everybody has a goatee, so we can tell the difference.

ummm I have a goatee

21 hours, 16 minutes left.

So in Bizarro world you wouldn't have one. Very clear difference between dimensions.

Just to be clear, I will reiterate for those who think the world will end tomorrow: they aren't actually doing the "really sketchy world ending" stuff until the end of the month.

Nah, that would be easy. His evil twin has a black goatee!

As long as I can learn to cast spells and create/control golems and undead, I don't really care which alt dimension we end up in.

So, LHC is running since an hour...

Nothing has seemed to happen.

Looks like Google has jumped on the LHC train.

Oh, doesn't everyone know? This is how the Spellplague starts...

Scarab Sages

We'll probably wind up stuck in some time loop.

Nah..what it does is cause the total breakdown of all technology on Earth and the magic returns.

We'll probably wind up stuck in some time loop.

Not again!

Why am i thinking of the stargate time loop episode now hummm

Like "Stargate: Continuum"?

clicky - xkcd

The validity of people's opinions on the likelyhood of the LHC destroying the world probably correlates quite strongly with whether or not they understand the (very old) jokes in the final panel :)

What do I predict will happen when they cross the beams?

The same as happened last time a big, complicated particle physics experiment was run, and the same as will happen the next time...

1. a handful of kooks will spout nonsense and the popular press will give equal weight to them as they give to the thousands of physicists who have an *informed* opinion on the matter

2. a bunch of useful physics will get done over the next few years

I'm voting with the kooks, just the same

Oh, well--end of the day in Geneva, and I'm still here...

We'll probably wind up stuck in some time loop.

We Learn stuff but it doesn't usher in anything till we get a strange but brilliant mind from off in left field that looks at things in a strange way and that shows us part of the nature of the universe that we didn't know or think of before, which causes everyone to forget a bit about Einstein and learn more of this strange person. And the Zealots will scream that this couldn't be because it doesn't add up to their perception of a creator and the atheist will think this is just another reason not to believe even when it has nothing to do whatsoever with or change in anyway any doctrine or dogma. And life will proceed as normal but we will have some strange shiny new toys we didn't have before.

Or we will all die in the mini black hole.

This post is really just for testing, but... wasn't there supposed to be an earth-shattering kaboom?

The LHC was shut down a week or two ago.

They had a leak in the cooling system. Revision will take a month or two. Then re-firing up the beam... The End of the world is postponed for 3 Months.

They forgot the Illudium Pu-36 Explosive Space Modulator.. that's the real reason for the so-called 'leak'. Don't fret Gary, you'll get your earth-shattering kaboom.. :)

I heard they would not fire it up again until Feburary. Nothing like having the end of the world on Valentine's Day. But how does this affect the Mayan calander?
