Planet Orcus

One of the dwarf planets that have been added to the solar system is called Orcus. If you were to set a Planetary Romance tale on Orcus, what would you imagine life on the planet would be like?

Liberty's Edge

It's not the kind of place to raise your kids.
In fact, it's cold as hell.

Love you for that, man. I was actually just singing Rocket Man three hours ago.

I bop between that and Major Tom in my head most of the time anyway.

Are you considering writing a story set there? An adventure?

Liberty's Edge

Or....let me get correct....Space Oddity.

"Your circuit's dead, there's something wrong... can you hear me, Major Tom?"

There's an earlier version of the song, than the 70's version you always hear on the radio, from '69 (timed with the moon landing) on which Rick Wakemen, future keyboardist from Yes, plays. It's a little more prog rock than the textural marvel that is the more famous version, but it's quite good. I have a bootleg early rehearsal of the song that's actually my favorite vocally.

I think that was part of a half hour video special he made for a German TV that was never aired. I have it around here somewhere.

OK so when did Orcus get upgraded?

It was discovered in 2004 and in 2006 is when they redefined the planets. In 2006, Pluto was downgraded to a dwarf planet and Ceres and Eris have been accepted as well. Makemake was the latest one I have heard of added as a dwarf planet.

Another new designation created in 2006 was small Solar System body, which does not quite meet the loose definition of a dwarf planet. Included as a small Solar System body was Orcus. A sSSb is basically any object other than a planet or dwarf planet and includes asteroids, comets and others.

Orcus was dual classified as am sSSb and a Plutino, but a Plutino is not necessarily a dwarf planet.

I just got birthed in 1969.

Grand Lodge

regardless, it would be a great place for ice elementals, or ice demons... and creatures that don't need light to survive. It is tiny and has a fraction of the gravity we have so the inhabitants are likely not very large and probably have a poor STR compared to an earthman.

Liberty's Edge

I doubt there's hardly any gravity there.
You could take a step for about a half hour and end up 200 feet in the air. Not saying there's much air there, but in a planetary romance there could be.

I vote for a zombie planet ruled by ghouls!

Working on a campaign. Was going to use Titan, but the name Orcus has such a ressonance with gamers that I had to use it.

It was one of the objects being considered when Pluto got demoted. I may have misread the article, but I could have sworn they said it was now a dwarf planet. Of course my local paper is notorious for getting things wrong so take it for what it's worth.

Edit: Okay officially Orcus is a plutino, but is being considered for dwarf planet status.

ok, so does this work like baseball? you get drafted (you're an "object") work your way up to AA (plutino), and, what? if you hit over .300 with some dingers and show decent glove work, you get to be a dwarf planet (AAA)?

or, maybe i should just go down to clear lake and ask one of the NASA dudes?

(ok, i'm a math and science idiot, can't help it, don't even know if i qualify as a geek - maybe a "geektino"?)

I would ask the NASA geeks, the uber-nerds of the world. All I know is what Nova and the news tells me.

This has my vote!

What about Charon? Shouldn't that qualify for some zombies and other plethora of undead?

I disagree, its the perfect place to raise your children...from the grave as zombies!

Shhhh! The last thing we need is scientists trying to blame DnD for a bunch of alien-corpse conspiracy theories

If it involve John Carter, then it needs a Martian name too.

sSSb = single-player Super Smash Brothers!?

I vote we name a loser planet after Gor!

Oh, and if I set a story on Orcus it would involve beings of pure energy. What?

With random samples of Mr. Spock saying "Pure Energy." "I wanna know, what you're thinking..."
