I must be a little slow, could you explain how this is supposed to work?
I figured, after each game session (3-5 hrs), award points based on various factors, to a maximum of 5 points per session. The 'points' on the chart would be how many points you'd need to become that level. Specifically for my group, i think this would work very well. If you notice, it starts so that for the first 5 levels, you could potentially level up after each session, and potentially leveling up after an additional session for every 5 levels. The higher level you are, the longer it takes to get to the next level. It starts at level 1-5 needing 5 points each level, 6-10 needing 10, 11-15 needing 15, and so on.
As i said before, for my group i think this would work very well. And this is mostly a reminder to myself later on what i was thinking at the time.

I use the even simpler system of "characters go up a level when I say so". Works fine for me. :)
I generally use a blend. If I feel the characters deserved to go up a level even though the XP said they didn't (for example, at the end of an adventure) I give them an arbitrary bump (usually using the "EL" of the adventure for the CR and calculating from there).
I like using XP costs, so I won't be going completely freeform.
