Fiend-Blooded or Blood Magus

3.5/d20/OGL

Looking for some advice on two PrC for a sorcerer, and I think I’ve narrowed it down to Fiend-Blooded or Blood Magus.
The Sorcerer has a bit of a necromantic bend to him. Lawful neutral but slowly losing his patience and not opposed to going evil, I don’t think. He is in the process of hunting down his mother’s consort, a Vampire Lord that “reared” him from a child for his sick ideas of deviant pleasure. However the Sorcerer is slowing finding himself trying to become what he hates to kill the Vampire Lord. Adult game to say the least with a really twisted back story, and the Campaign I can see heading into a bit of a Ravenloft gothic horror area (at least I’m trying!).

Fiend-Blooded (Heroes of Horror)
Slowly unlock your fiendish heritage. (I’m going to say necromantic exposure or vampire taint if you will)

You get stat boosting Str Dex Int Cha, fiendish familiar, an expanded spell list of spells know in fire, illusion, enchantment, and necromantic schools, and some type of weak smiting.

D4, poor BAB, and you lose a level of casting

Blood Magus (Complete Arcane)
After dying and coming back to life you have a closer connection with blood. (Hence the vampire thing)

Boost spells via blood, increase concentration checks via blood, scribe scrolls on skin, brew potions in your blood, increased con, homunculus familiar, weak damage reduction, force blood out of people’s bodies, and teleport via blood/bodies causing death to said bodies.

D6, poor BAB, and you lose two levels of casting.

Any ideas or suggestions we are still very early on level 2, but I’m trying to plan ahead and weave as much of my story into my character as possible?

I have alway been intrigued by the Blood Magnus (I think it's the picture). Based on your descriptions I would say Blood Magnus. It just seems to fit the background story well. Granted the Fiend-Blooded seems to be a better PrC for a Sorcerer since extra known spells alone it quite valuable.

I've always thought the fiend-blooded was a great class in both flavor and abilities. You do lose that one level of spellcasting, but all the ability bonuses and extra spells known are worth it, IMO.

Flavor-wise, it's pretty good for your character concept as-is, but if your DM agrees, it might make sense to change the Knowledge [the Planes] entry requirement to Knowledge [Religion] (as you continually study the weaknesses of your "father" ...) Also, maybe the Blood Calls to Blood feat can be modified to give you the bonus on saves against undead instead of fiends, which would fit; the more like them you become, the less they are able to effect you with their powers ...

Another option to consider (if you haven't already) might be the Pale Master from Libris Mortis. It's tied more generally to Necromancy and the undead, but some of the class abilities may be useful (animate dead, control undead, Darkvision, Undead Armor Affinity). Note that the 10th level capstone ability for the PrC (Deathless Mastery) is extremely useful for someone who wants to fight undead. Flavor text aside, a Pale Master can make an interesting "fighting fire with fire" undead slayer.

Libris Mortis also has the Half-Vampire template, which may be a good source of ideas/inspiration.

I did look at the Pale Master and was tempted by it, but I felt like it was flaunting the undead thing too much to try to be in a goodish party. I also feel like my character is too vane to have a skeletal arm. I might have to have a seconded look at the Pale Master and talk to my DM about some of my vanity issues. I’ll have to look over the Half-Vampire template for some ideas. I was really looking to get a template at all, but made toward the end I can pick one up for the all out fight end fight with the Vampire Lord.

I’m still having a hard time deciding between the Blood Magus and Fiend-Blooded…damn so many good choices. Any more ideas?

Thanks

3 suggestions for you, depending on what level you're on.

Dread Necromancer - Uber Badass Necromonger - coupled with some basic low level arcane spells via the sorcerer (mage armor, feather fall, rope trick, invisibility) you end up being just bad ass. Taking Scribe scroll and practiced spellcaster for the Dread Necro makes you particularly brutal early on.

True Necromancer - I think it's in Libris Mortis - Take some levels in Cleric and go... Sorcerer/Cleric for that just sounds absolutely nasty. and, of course, taking Practiced Spellcaster for this one is just. uber.
(Sorcerer 4/Cleric 3 -> True Necro)

Take all 3 levels of Human Paragon from Unearthed Arcana and on level 6 take a level of Fighter or Ranger to match up the pre-req's, and then go Ur Priest for 10 Levels from complete Divine. you could work a very nice storyline out of that. (Sorcerer 2/Paragon 3/Fighter 1 -> Ur Priest)

but if you're really set on the two you've got, Fiend Blooded is far more fun to play with than blood magus, and forget losing the level, it happens.
