Wizard & the multiclassing rules

4th Edition

OK, I need a bit more help/guidance :)

I'm putting together a Wizard with the Pact Initiate and Novice Power feats. At 4th level I'll have color spray and shock sphere as my 3rd level attack powers (only one of which can be prepared at any time).

With Novice Power I choose to swap out a 3rd-level power for a 3rd-level Warlock power (Otherwind Stride). Do I lose both Wizard powers for the Warlock power, or do I lose one and gain the Warlock power as a choice to prepare that day (perhaps being able to choose between preparing Otherwind Stride or Color Spray)?

I know what option makes sense to me, but I'm looking for specific wording from the rules that clears this up.

Thanks anybody :)

Ugh, it's the middle of the night and my book's not to hand. I am 90% sure you lose both the wizard powers and just have the warlock power, but if no one else has answered it with a quote then I'll go through the book tommorow and try and find something RAW to quote.

I'm pretty sure Wizards don't get to choose between Encounter Attack spells, just Utility and Daily spells.

That said, while I think switching out one and getting to choose between the two would be cool, I think you lose access to both for the one you swap in from the other class. I'm not sure if there is anything in the books that says so; I think a CSR ruled that way though (to be honest, CSR rulings aren't worth much so ...)

Kinda funny Tat ... my character in my Wednesday group is also a Wizard with Pact Initiate. Only 2nd, so can't take any of the power swap feats, but I'm keeping my eye out for a good Warlock power to snag. Any Warlock powers you're looking forward to snapping up with your Wizard?

Cheers! :)

This is what I suspect, and how I'd rule as a DM, but I'd really like to find ironclad wording to that effect. It might be one of those things that slipped through the cracks (or was considered too obvious to have to say).

You're right -- thanks. We haven't played yet, so I haven't abused any rules or embarrassed my self yet (except here) :)

I'm particularly interested in Otherwind Stride, and I'm conveniently a bit underwhelmed by my Wizard Attack 3 choices. Beyond that, I think Curse of the Bloody Fangs is too cool for words, but I don't think I'm willing to give up Fireball for it -- which probably means making a Wand of Fireballs when the time comes.

I love both Warlock and Wizard. In the end, though, Wizards offer me cantrips, a couple of archetypal spells I can't live without, and more satisfying range and area effects (really I've always preferred the role 4e calls controller over the role of striker). Luckily the multiclassing feats give me just enough to combine the two perfectly for my taste.

Don't forget you can make Wands with Warlock powers in them as well, as long as they are Encounter powers. You don't even have to know how to use them! Once I get Enchant Item I plan on popping out a wand or two with some choice Utility spells, I think.
