So I'm in Oregon waiting for my daughter to pop our first grandkid. He's being ornery though (takes after me) so there's been alot of waiting around.
Here in Astoria there's a pretty cool game/comic store. Amazing Stories that I've been wasting time at and helping him pay his rent. Btw, it's an awesome store if you're ever here. Stop in!
I perused the rpg shelf and I don't see much of any Paizo on there. I asked regarding Paizo and the minion here went "who?". Not a good sign. I spoke to the owner up front and he again went "Who?" Used to do Dragon/Dungeon magazine? Oh yah. I said "Pathfinder" and he sort of heard of that. Not good.
I asked about the Pathfinder Campaign Setting and he hadn't heard of it. He looked it up in Alliance and stated that it said it came out on the 27th, but didn't seem to be orderable, they had no stock. So he couldn't even order it for me even if I was going to be here for awhile.
So, a couple questions:
If I'm in a strange town, what's the best way to get them interested in Paizo products other then asking "hey, do you have this?" and talking them up. Does Paizo have some sort of retail reach-out program or the like?
And: Why's the campaign setting not in the store, or even orderable by the store?

It was shipped out to distributers about the same time it went to subscribers, therefor alliance hasn't received their stock yet. because it it so close to the release date alliance won't accept preorders anymore.
this is just my speculation, with my knowledge of alliance from the retail perspective

When Necromancer and Green Ronin first started publishing 3E material, it was still the wild west of 3rd party publishing.
I think the best way to get Pathfinder to grab a strong foothold is to play it and evangelize it whenever you can. Kinda sucks, but very much in this industry you have to subtly convert people through a gentle discussion of the merits of the system.

this is true.. maybe since they are your FLGS ask if you can run PFS games there and put up a flyer with your phone number to form a FLGS PFS group?

Yea, a gaming group that plays a product is proof positive to the store owner. Many of the store owners are curious to see how a gaming group interacts by watching them between customers and orders. This is the way to subtly brainwash a store keeper. It helps if the group patrons the store and makes special orders that send out signals as to what gamers are buying.

You're correct that Alliance wouldn't have their stock yet, but they're more than happy to take preorders for anything that hasn't arrived yet.
I find it amusing* that a store called Amazing Stories hasn't heard of the company that most recently published that magazine.
*"amusing" is not the actual word I was thinking of.

No, it really wasn't amusing. It's clear they're a comics shop first, gaming second. Even so I didn't see many magazines per se, so not having heard of Amazing Stories didn't surprise me. Every graphic novel ever published though.
The gaming section was in the back and they had all the new WotC stuff prominently displayed. It was good to see the bulletin board with gamer notices - nice! They even had three full bookshelves of RPG materials, I saw Green Ronin and a number of other 3rd parties items out there. Not one Paizo book, though! I got all Verkelmpt!
If you ever come up with some sort of "retail kit" you should let folks know so we can nominate the clueless FLGS in our area. :-)
