Looks like we'll be able to see Faye Valentine in the flesh! Fox is developing a Live-Action Version of the anime.

*Update

Has nothing to do with the post, but I'll try to have the Wolverine Teaser Trailer up later.

Sovereign Court

Well, I liked the cartoon, and I liked scanner darkly...

This is great news, but please Keanu Reeves as Spike? If they insist on doing this I will boycot the movie and sit at home and watch my DVD collection instead. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way.
Edit: And who's going to do Faye, Demi Moore?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo.........

Dark Archive

My feelings exactly.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Leave Bebop in peace, for chrissakes! Leave the series and the movie ALONE!

Silver Crusade

Oh God. Is this some sort of karmic backlash because I was laughing at the live action DBZ movie so much?

I'M SORRY DBZ FANS, I'M SORRY.

What about the Seatbelts? They wouldn't make this without the Seatbelts would they? Could they?

It's weird how I can feel so apprehensive about this when I would be shouting "Set sail for Awesome!" if it had been a live action Lupin III movie announced.

Why must every book, graphic novel and anime I like be utterly ruined by Keanu Reeves? Did someone appoint him Chief Desecrator of Geek Culture?

I haven't been satisfied with any of the comic book to movie adaptations of recent years (with the possibly exception of Sin City), so I doubt this will be anything great. Movie adaptations come in 2 varieties: Travesties and Copies. The first invokes outrage and the second boredom.

Whoa. I'm Spike. I know Kung fu.

Because someone told the studios how much we all love the Bill and Ted.

It's true.

The studios also want...
Sean Connery for Jet Black...
and Faye is going to be played by Jack Black in a dress.

It will make MILLIONS.

It's brrrrriliant.

Another point for my theory that any role Keanu Reeves does, Christian Bale could do better.

Looks like I forgot to update this.

Well Friday while watching the Feed it was offically confirmed that Keanu would indeed be playing the role of Spike Spiegel, pilot of the spaceship Bebop. Funny how Jet got left out...

Now responses from G4 viewer about this news:

"Whoa..."
"I highly disapprove! I don’t want Spike sounding like a mentally slow stoner. But will I still go see the movie? Yes, yes, yes and yes."
"I have heard he is a massive fan-boy of Cowboy Bebop. Not that that means it will be good, but sometimes when you love something like that you bring something better to it (as opposed to The Day the Earth Stood Still.)"
"I don't know anything about "Cowboy Bebop." But I assume it's about a stoner/surfer/pretty boy type that gets into all kinds of hilarious hijinks? If so, then well cast indeed!"
"Something like that. I don't know for sure because I've never made it more than two episodes into that stone-dead boring series -- Yeah, I said it."
"It would be completely awesome if Ein ate him."

I leave you with this...Cosby Bebop

The drummer from The Stranglers?

O_o?

I dunno, despite his reputation, I've never disliked Keanu Reeves, or his acting (or non-acting, perhaps). I've never disliked a movie he was in: from Bill and Ted, to Point Break, the Matrix movies, Through the Scanner Darkly, or Constantine.

Spike is moody, surly, an ass, and shows little emotion. Do you doubt that Keanu Reeves can play that?

Besides, I also read that they're getting the orignal japanese creators behind this as well, so perhaps the feel and tone of Cowboy Bebop will be retained.

Despite all the disparaging remarks, I remain hopeful. Tentatively hopeful, anyway. I know what Hollywood usually does to movies like these. :/

Of course, regardless of how good (or bad) it is, I'll go and see it.

Spike is also a guy with a lot of emotion boiling underneath a surface, and with a dark past that he can't get away from. With Keanu Reeves, you sometimes get a surface emotion and that's it. This is terrible casting.

I am not happy. I'm not going to say that this is the worst move ever, or the film is going to suck, but I don't think this is a good casting choice and I would be pleased to see someone else (perhaps an unknown) fill the roll of Spike. Also I don't generally like live action remakes of cartoons.

My question is: what exactly would make a Hollywood live-action Bebop different from any other story about drifters and/or film noir IN SPACE? The cool aspects about TV Bebop were:

  • the mysterious and bizarre stories (they've said they might do
    Spoiler:
the "Red Eye" drug story from ep. 1
    - Far from the greatest choice)
  • the great cel animation and good-at-the-time CG animation (maybe they can knock our socks off here)
  • the rocking eclectic soundtrack (Yoko Kanno/The Seatbelts are the main names I *haven't* seen in the press releases yet, so who knows)
  • well-done Classic Hollywood gangster film noir in ANIME (the significance is completely lost if it's actually done by Hollywood)

Honestly, although everybody's jumping up over Keanu, my issue is that I don't think a Hollywood Cowboy Bebop really needs to be made. We know the story, we've got the mysterious bits, the characters are pretty well fleshed-out. So where's the added value of a new movie?

Now if they were to talk about a live-action "Trigun"...

I am dissappointed indeed. I personally believe this is another nail in the coffin for Hollywood. They are out of ideas. So what do they do? Give us remakes of something that was good and remake it until we hate it.

I will mourn the death of Cowboy Bebop by sobbing quietly in a corner huddling me knees to my chest (with my beloved CB movie & boxset). I'll probably break down & watch it when it comes to the $1 redbox rental.

I dont have anything against Reeves, I just hate remakes. Or films made from comics. Or "re-envisioned" films like Batman. Actually, I think I automatically hate about 95% of what Hollywood craps out lately. When are they going to look for fresh ideas???

Yeah, I know I am getting my hopes up there on the fresh idea thing, but they really need to get some fresh blood in there. The transfusions from dead horses are turning them all into zombies.

Whoever plays Faye Valentine better have a righteous rack.

No twigs playing one of the hottest frozen ladies in the Bebop galaxy please.

seeing the crappy choice for Spike, my money is on Devon Aoki for Faye

Yikes... I hope this turns out Ok.... I don't want to see poor Spike and company brought down by a lame movie... Specially Einstein! :D
