The earliest I suspect we'll have a picture of the Carrion King is probably five months from now.

As for what he is? Either gnoll or a flind or a demon or a human wizard posing as a gnoll or a dragon or a deranged genie or a displaced boggard or something else entirely.

No problem!

Part of the reason I'm evasive is that what exactly the Carrion King is IS supposed to be a mystery. The PCs have to do 2 adventures before they figure it out.
