Mishi's Last Baron Game Discussion

Play-by-Post Discussion

Welcome to the Last Baron game discussion thread. :)

Players:
Larcifer
Amelia
Cry Havoc!
Durendal
Kevin Mack

Possibly:
Franz Lunzer

The game premise:

The game will take place in Andoran, near the border with Cheliax and at the edge of the Darkmoon Vale region. Tensions between Andoran and Cheliax are high, with Cheliax eager to regain its old empire, and Andoran anxious to protect its lands.

The game will start with a member of the Andoran military contacting each of the PCs with a proposal.

Character creation rules:

1. No evil characters
2. 5th level characters - 20-point buy using the PFRPG Alpha 3 rules
3. Standard hit points
4. Starting gold will be as the DMG's wealth table (9000g for 5th level)
5. Core classes only. For non-core feats/spells, please run them past me first - I'd like to take a case-by-case basis for these.
6. For character backgrounds, how would the military have heard of your character? Has your character done any notable deeds in his/her career, earned a reputation of some sort in Darkmoon Vale (or elsewhere in Andoran), perhaps he/she has done some work for the Andoran military in the past, or another reason?

Dice rolls should use invisible castle.

Any further questions, please ask :)

Male Human Technician 17

As I said in the other thread, I'm thinking of an Half-Giant Barbarian.

If I get an Okay from you on this, I think about his Background.

I should normally be able to be online about 4 hours a day either during my work-time or after that at home, but probably not on weekends.
That should be enough time to post at least twice a day.

Your post only appeared for me on the other thread after I had made my last two posts. :(

The game is fairly infiltration heavy in a pretty isolated setting, so very unusual characters might find things pretty difficult. That's why I didn't think catfolk would fit so well. I think the same would be true for half-giant.

As for posting times - that sounds fine. I don't expect people to be around so much at the weekends - my weekends can get fairly busy too.

I know base classes only, does this rule out the variants, was wondering if you would consider the Battle Sorcerer from UA pg 56? I think adjusting it to the Pathfinder sorcerer would be very straight forward. please let me know here is a link to it incase you need it...
http://www.crystalkeep.com/d20/rules/DnD3.5Index-Classes-Base.pdf
(pg 114 of that online document)

Male Human Technician 17

Judging from the picture of the Half-Giant and the description I found they seem to look mostly like bigger Humans.
Yeah, he would be a really big Human, but not that far off as a catfolk.

But, I try thinking of something else, if you insist.

I'll try to get my character posted up tonight, though I may not succeed.

mine will be done just waiting to see if I cna use the variant...I have stats done and soon back story, just need the crunch...

Scarab Sages

Definitely interested in playing if you have any openings.

Male Halfling Rogue 1/Ranger 4

Cry Havoc here, working on Figgin Brower, Halfling Ranger

Larcifer here working on Anuk-Itan, just waiting to see if I can use the Battle Sorcerer variant. Either way his backstory and stats are done. Let me know if he looks alright...

Larcifer here:
There are 2 feats I want that are non core if I can have them I have to adjust my stats so my CHARISMA is 15 (no prob for me). They are:
1)Frightful Presence (Dcn p106)
CHA 15; Intimidate 9 ranks
Whenever you attack or charge, all opponents within a 30'radius, who have fewer levels/HD than you do become Shaken for (1d6+Charisma Modifyer) rounds (Will NEg, DC=10+1/2 characte rlevel+Charisma modifyer). On a successful Save, the opponet is immune to your frightful Presense for 24 hours. This ability cannot affect creatures with less than 3 intelligence or lower, nor does it work vs Dragons.
2)Precocious Apprentice (CArc p181)
Arcane spellcaster 1st level Spell casting ability Score (Int or Cha) 15+ 1st level only
+2 on spellcraft checks. Choose a 2nd level spell from a school of magic to which you have access. You may cast this spell once per day by making a Caster level check vs. DC8(failure means the spell is depleated for the day). When you gain 2nd level spells, you continue to have an extra spell slot, though it no longer has to be dedicated to the originally chosen spell.
I also have some spells I want from other sources they are:
Level 0: Fleeting Fame, Silent Portal
Level 1: Critical Strike, Expiditious Retreat (swift)
Level 2: Blades of Fire, Blade Weave

Female Half Elf Sorcerer 5 (Air Elemental Bloodline)

Amelia here.

My base stats are done up and in the profile. Racial Bonus went to cha, level 4 +1 went to Dex.

I still need to gear her and write her backstory, but she can hold her own with sneakiness :)

If anyone has any questions about feat/spell/skill choices ask :)

I'm also not totally sure I'll stay with one level 2 spell: Melf's Acid Arrow, I love the spell but I might swap for a different one before game start, still debating that.

If anyone wants to coordinate on backgrounds, let me know :)

Apologies for the delay in replying - I'm in the UK time zone, so I was asleep.

Anuk-Itan: Yes to the feats, no to the battle-sorceror variant. I'd like to get some experience with the PRPG classes before allowing any variants. The power curve for a lot of the classes is a little different now and I'd like to get a feel for them first before changing things about.

As for the spells, I'll get back to you later today on those - need to look them up first.
For your background, etc:

Spoiler:
Looks mostly ok. I think it's going to be interesting with your character's appearance - you might still find some things a little tricky depending on how the game plays out, but it should probably work, given the Andoran-Cheliaxian tension - it would be assumed that you are Cheliaxian on first sight by most people. As far as the hook with the military goes, it's not *quite* what the military will ask of you at the game start, but it's pretty close - I do like the idea of using your appearance for the hook. :)

Meadow, Figgin: I don't have the alpha in front of me just now (at work at the moment), but looks good so far. :)

Male Human Technician 17

Still "No" to the Half-Giant?

I think it's still going to have to be a no. I do agree that appearance wise, they look like large humans, but I looked the crunch for them up and half-giants are a psionic race - they get some psi abilities regardless of whether they take a psionic class or not - I'd rather not have psionics if that's ok.

Male Human Technician 17

Yeah, they get Stomp 1/day. Which he probably won't ever use, for it effects everything in the radius, friends and foes alike... (as I read it).

But okay, have to think of something else then.

We still need a healer, don't we?

Yup. So far the group has:

Two sorcerors, a ranger and a bard. I think Durendal was thinking of playing a rogue the last time he posted.

Male Human Technician 17

I'm thinking of a human Paladin now... not much of a healer, but better than nothing. I don't like Clerics and I can't think of an interessting Druid to play.

Dark Archive

stupid question but what are standard Hp for a bard again? Is it 4 per lvl ? Also can DEX be used in CMB or is it always STR?

Franz: Sure, sounds good - a paladin will be interesting for this game. Bards have some healing abilities as well, so paladins having limited healing should be ok for the party.

Kevin: Franz is right - it's d8 :) I believe it's STR for CMB, but I can check for certain later.

Mishi wrote:

That's right, Rogue...but I've decided to opt for Elf as far as race. I'm working the char up now, and ferreting out info on elves in Golarion. Will post character as soon as it looks like something.

Male Halfling Rogue 1/Ranger 4

Figgin is coming together pretty well. I've actually worked him up now as a Rogue 1/Ranger 4, mainly just to get access to a couple more class skills, and for the Sneak Attack damage. He's built to be a ranged skirmisher type of combatant, with a lot of stealthy attributes. He'd be pretty handy in the wilderness too, but I'm not sure if that will play in much with this module. Hopefully, he won't step on the toes of the party's true rogue in any way.

He's nearly done, I just need to purchase his equipment.

Male Elf Rogue 5
Figgin Brower wrote:

I'm sure we'll be fine especially considering the infiltration elements mentioned before. I'm trying for a 'special forces' medieval-edition feel for 'Thrane' here. He's still taking shape...back to work.

Background

Born in Andoran Felicia has always had a natural Talent at entertaining people with her singing voice a talent that caught the attention of a wondering bard who took it upon himself to teach Felicia all that he knew about music. The pair travled for several years until eventualy Felicia decided to go her own way and began to travel the border land area of Andoran inspiring those that needed it the most. The Andoran military stationed on the border. Felicia would go to many of the camps and use her voice to improve the moral of the soldiers and on a couple of ocasions help out with other tasks such as dealing with rogue monsters. This combined with her friendly personality makes her popular with many of the Andoren soldiers.

Personality

Felicia is easy and outgoing and normaly tries to do what she thinks is right, She however can be naive at times and can be talked into doing something she normaly wouldent do herself.

I think the background could use a little more work but besides that im good to go.

I took an approach much like this, pondering how to turn a traditional not really sneaky class in something more sneaky. Pathfinder helped with this a lot by making class skills just provide a skill bonus, so you can max out and skill. Combined with free Half Elf Skill focus it made it pretty easy to come up with a pure caster that's not that far behind a rogue or ranger when it comes to sneaking.

Yeah, it's a lovely system I think...now to see how it plays. :)

Thrane is mostly done, background and appearance are in. Still have to do some shopping. On hit points, how are we handling...rolling on invisible castle or...

Thanks

Hey I am cool with straight sorcerer, I get more spells! WOrked 12 hours today and tommorow but will have character done by tommorow night! Looking forward to this...

Much like Larcifer, I had a long, tough workday. So, Figgin isn't done yet, sorry. I've just run out of steam tonight to work on him. I will certainly get him done over the weekend. Thanks!

Male Human Cleric 2

Merrik is mostly done, though I have to think about the backstory a bit longer.

Gonna fill out my profile until then.

Larcifer, Cry Havoc, no worries - I've had a long day myself today and am just about ready to hit my bed. :(

I'll give things a proper check over some time tomorrow - looks like we should probably be ready to start a day or two after the weekend. :)

Female Half Elf Sorcerer 5 (Air Elemental Bloodline)

Gear's done. Still playing around with background ideas, though I can easily see her having done scout things for the army before. And the lack of a weapon is purposeful :)

Larcifer here Anuk-Itan is done(I think) except for mundane equipment...

Male Human Cleric 2

Merriks Backstory: I hope it is okay.

Spoiler:
Merrik was born as the sixth child of a farming familie. As the first three sons were about to take over the farm, he was given to the church to become a priest of Pharasma.
In his first years of education he and a 1 year older boy named Olear became friends which held until Olear died.
That was the point, when Merrik backed away from Pharasma to become a paladin of Iomedae, even though he didn't know that by then.

Olear wasn't the most honest a boy could be. He knew his tricks to survive the life of an orphan, in a city where everyone only cared for themselves and believed in the fate of a simple life and an neutral deity.
Olear had some people agains him, one of them being a cleric of Pharasma, whome he tricked into giving him his clothes, just to keep him warm.
The boy spoke out a bet the priest could not win, so he didn't steal, and never would have done it.

Some months later, fate took Olears live. By accident the boy slipped under a loaden cart full of ore, which just that moment had a failure of the brakes.

Olear could still life, if the same priest wouldn't have been present, stopping others of casting spells to heal the boy speaking that "fate spoke the words of Pharasma over the boy".

Not long thereafter, Merrik left the Church, in search for a world of more justice, where poeple would care better for the others.
He did not find it until now, but he found Iomedae and his followers, becoming a Paladin in Iomedae's name.

His search for peace and justice lead him to Andoran and his stunning charisma earned him some reputation on his own.

Character is stated up in the profil, equipment is purchased, Mechanic is completed.

Anything I missed?

Male Halfling Rogue 1/Ranger 4

Figgin's done, so far as I can tell (pending DM approval).

Mishi, just let me know if you need any more information, or have any questions.

Ok. I'm at work just now, but I'll be leaving shortly - I should be home in around an hour or so. Once I get home, I'll check things over for any issues :)

Ok, I've just finished checking things over. Mostly everything looks good - just a few things for a couple of people:

Merrick:

Spoiler:

Looks good overall - just a couple of things:

Skills: Handle Animal can't be used untrained - you'd need to put a rank in it to use it. I think you should have class skill bonuses for Diplomacy and Ride (and Handle Animal if you put ranks into it).

Background: Looks mostly good. Can you give me a little more information on how Merrick gained the reputation though? He's charismatic, but what has he actually done since becoming a paladin of Iomedae?

Anuk-Itan:

Spoiler:

I think you've got 500 extra gold of equipment/gold - it adds up to 9500 rather than 9000.

Also, can you tell me what books the spell Blade Weave is from? I can't find it. The other spells are fine.

Apart from that, looks good.

Meadow:

Spoiler:

Stats look fine, just need a background for you now. :)

Looks like everyone's nearly done now - I'll aim to have the actual game thread started in the next couple of days. :)

Merrick:
** spoiler omitted **

Mishi:

Spoiler:

You are right on the skills, though I didn't have ranks in Diplomacy, which I changed now as well.

As for the Background: That's something I actually did not think of as for now. Can we maybe work something out together? I'm not that sure I can come up with something decent.

I'm gonna update the prepared spells at the time we start playing.

Female Half Elf Sorcerer 5 (Air Elemental Bloodline)

My background is done, hope it meets your approval :)

Ok the Gold issue is fixed, and the spell Blade weave is from COmplete Adventurer pg. 144. I am assuming a can cast these spells on my claws so....

Thrane: I apologise, I missed your question about hit points above. It's up to you - you can use invisible castle or roll yourself. Actual in-game rolls should use invisible castle, but I don't mind which you use for hit points. :)

Merrick:

Spoiler:

Ah, I missed that on the diplomacy skill. Thanks for pointing that out. :)

As for background ideas, sure. It depends on what you'd like Merrick to be known for. Perhaps he could have a reputation as a negotiator, in which case, maybe he helped the Andorans mediate a dispute between two major nobles in a town. Or maybe, he could have a reputation for helping the innocent/needy - perhaps he helped hold a town against a kobold/hobgoblin/other savage humanoid attack until the army arrived to drive them back? Or perhaps he has a reputation for justice - he could have helped track down and bring to justice some wanted criminals for the Andorans?

Do any of those hooks help? If they give you an idea for something else, feel free to run with that too. :)

Meadow: Looks good. :)

Anuk-Itan: Thanks - not sure why I didn't find it before. That's fine. Also, the spells say melee weapon in their description, so they would work for claws.

Male Human Technician 17

Mishi:

Spoiler:

I like the "Desperate Helper"-Idea. It also would be a hook for the military of Andoran.
If I had a name of an appropriate town, I would write it immediately into the Background.

Thanks!

I'm waiting for the PBP-Thread now.

Cool, glad I can use em with my Claws, its gonna be different playing a sorcerer as a punch you in the face front line fighter, but I am curious to see if it works or if Anuk-Itan has to tuck his tail between his legs and move behind the d10 hitdicers, we will see!
Helps wearing the armor and having spells with Verbal only components and swift actions!

Mishi, any issues or concerns with Figgin?

Cry Havoc: Nope, he looks good :)

Larcifer: Yup, it's an interesting take. Keep in mind that your armour still has a spell failure chance though.

Franz:

Spoiler:

Ok, cool. I don't have the gazetteer, unfortunately (was waiting for the campaign setting), so feel free to just make a name up - there will be small towns and villages that don't necessarily show on large maps of the region. :)

Male Human Technician 17

Mishi:

Spoiler:

Will do.
I have the gazetteer, will look into it then.

I'm out of the office today, mostly.
Be back tomorrow, or maybe later today.

Franz: Sounds good. :)

Since everyone seems to be just about done now, I'll aim to have the actual game thread created soon - hopefully some time later on tonight.

Yes I am aware of the arcane spell failure chance its at 15% but most of my spells are Verbal only so there is only an arcane spell failure for spells with a Somatic component. The once with a somatic component I tried to use once that had Duration of Hours so I cast them before I suit up then if I have to recast them I take a chance or if time/situation allows take armor off and then put back on. Invisibility is the tricky one, I have many scrolls incase I keep hitting the 15% mark and failing....Like I say I have never tried this so I want to see if it works...Thanks for approving it, I enjoy outside of the box!

Fair enough :).

I've started the actual play-by-post thread, however the forums have decided not to show it properly at the moment. :( I'll post a link once the thread re-appears.

Edit: There we go. Game Thread
