Tricky Owlbear's 1st Anniversary and BtS: Compendium released!

3.5/d20/OGL

At long last, the book many have been waiting for is finally available and just in time for Tricky Owlbear's 1st anniversary! Behind the Spells: Compendium presents the first 36 issues of the Behind the Spells series along with brand new content and behind-the-scenes comments by the author!

As always, for each spell you get a history of the creator, at least two "spell secrets" (new rules for using the spell), and "related research" (new material which somehow relates to the spell or its creator). Whether you're a player or a GM, there's wealth of v3.5/OGL information in these pages just waiting to be unleashed at the game table.

Why buy books packed with new spells when there is still so much that can be done with the classics? Get back to basics with Behind the Spells Compendium!

As of this day, this title is only available as a pdf at the usual online venues and here at Paizo.com. But within the next week, you'll be able to purchase a print copy through Lulu.com (softcover and hardcover)! Watch for that announcement soon.

Retail price for the pdf is $15 but in honor of our anniversary, we're offering it at 20% off (or $12) for the next week. Thanks to everyone for your support of the series over the last 3 years!

Congratulations, Bret!

Gratz! I get paid soon and I will be sending some money your way. Is there a print version available?

Edit - Never mind. I jsut noticed that the print version will be available soon. Thanks!

Actually, I jumped the gun a little with this press release since it looks like the Paizo techs haven't yet uploaded the file here. Shouldn't be too long though.

Sweet.

Might just get the PDF and Staples rather than Lulu. But definately on my 'right after I pay the mortgage' list.

Oooooh! New Shiny!

Sweet! I was very impressed with the sample you sent me. I'll have to get this in one of its forms soon. Gotta pay bills first but I will get it when in a couple weeks XD

Thanks for the encouraging words, folks! I know Paizo needs to "review" all files before activation but maybe this one is taking more time since it's over 100 pages. I should have held off on the announcement, I suppose, but wanted to get the word out on our anniversary date. :)

The print version of Behind the Spells: Compendium is now available at Lulu.com! Follow this link to get your softcover copy now: stores.lulu.com/trickyowlbear

Hardcover coming soon (we are waiting for our publisher copy for approval). Still no download here at Paizo.

Sweet! Over to Lulu I shall wander.

Many thanks! I tried and failed to linkify it but from now on I should be good. :)

The book is now up here at Paizo! Because of the delay, this site is now the only one you can get the 20% discount for the pdf for another whole week. So don't delay, buy Behind the Spells: Compendium today!

In addition to the new book (in pdf and print), we've also opened up the Tricky Owlbear Emporium where you can get our corporate and series logos on various items. Just one more way to help your small third party publisher of 3.5 rules. :)

The first review (at least the first I've seen) for the Compendium is in. Check it out here! Anyone else that's picked it up have any comments?

Any updates on the hardcover version?

Thanks!

Thanks for the question, Michael. We actually hit a snafu for the hardcover--when we received our copy to make sure everything looked OK, it..um...did not look OK. Something was horribly off with the cover image. I just uploaded a new version and now must wait again for a copy to arrive to verify that all is well. Once I'm satisfied, I'll be announcing its availability. I appreciate everyone's patience if you're waiting for the hardcover version.

I bought the softcover version, and I love it.

Some of the spell secrets are a bit powerful, I feel. Others look powerful, but aren't in the end. (Prestigitation read as Bigby's Grasping Tactical Nuke until I read that it's always centred on caster. There it makes for a nice 'final strike' mechanic.)

For that Prestidigitation spell secret, the effect is not centered on the caster if he's dispelling/counterspelling someone else's Universal spell. Thanks much for the thoughts and the praise--nothing lets us know we're doing a good job like someone saying, "I love it." :)

I know many of you have been waiting for Behind the Spells: Compendium to be available in a hardcover format. Well, the wait is over! For $31.95 you can be the proud owner of this magical tome of 3.5/OGL goodness in all its hardback glory.

You can grab your copy HERE! Thanks for your patience and enjoy!

Here's some more praise for the Compendium from user brekkil over on ENWorld...

"I've bought the book! The print version!

This is one cool book. If you like playing a wizard... buy it! If you like reading cool stories... buy it! If you want more out of all the spells you already know... buy it! If you like spell secrets...buy it!

It's familiar, but it's all new! I've already utilized some of the ideas in a 3.5e campaign I'm playing in... especially some of the twisted stories! (see Sleep)

...hope this helps some! Oh yeah, and... it aint even that expensive, especially for a book of such quality. A great addition to your pathfinder campaign..."

At last, the first official review has rolled in: 5 out of 5!
