...what are the days other countries celebrate their independence, patriotism, birth, etc.? I'm aware of Bastille Day but that's about it.

Liberty's Edge

mexico has a zillion "independence days" (driving in some of their cities is like driving on a calendar), but cinco de mayo, marking the defeat of the french in the 1860s is the most famous.

I don't know if it too similar but the British celebrate Guy Fawkes Day with fireworks. I think it is Nov. 5th., but I'm not sure if the holiday is a celebration of patriotism or just an excuse to blow off fireworks and burn Fawkes in effigy.

Any Brits out there to help my memory out?

remember remember the fifth of November...

**EDIT** Wow! on the same wavelength, Patrick.
wiki = Guy Fawkes

We just had Canada Day a few days ago, July the 1st. It is the anniversary of "confederation" when the first provinces formed an actual nation. We celebrate with fireworks and trying to convince ourself that we really aren't exactly the same as our neighbours to the south. ;-)

Except for Quebec, where they celebrate their "national birthday" (la Fête Nationale) on June 24th, if I recall correctly. It's a bigger holiday than Canada Day there. Plus it's their 400th year this year, so it's a big deal right now, it seems.

Good ol' Quebec. Always the exception to the rule! :)

That's us...we throw the best parties!

And there's a Quebec link to July 4th - the Quebec Act of 1774 was one of the Intolerable Acts that lead to the American Revolution.

That you do! I really want to try to make it out to Quebec City this summer and see it for the first time, it'd be cool to go this year, what with the whole 400 year anniversary thing. Party it up, québecois style!

Well the Cajuns are descended from the original Arcadian settlers who were forced to migrate after the British took over Nova Scotia.

As an aside, it seems the falling dollar has enabled a Quebecois style invasion of my home turf of Cape Cod. The Je me souviens plate can be seen far and wide this year... but that means extra dollars for our economy I guess ...

Bonjour mes amis! Allez-y a la Cape Cod mainteneant!

Isn't it Acadian, not Arcadian?

It is. In fact, the term 'Cajun' started as a mispronunciation of the term 'Acadian'. Over time, it became pronounced 'acad-jian', then 'aca-jun' and finally just 'cajun', where it's remained.

I don't think the cajuns and the acadians have that much in common anymore, though.
