If someone wants to run Keep on the Shadowfell, or another 4th Edition game, I have the PHB and would also be interested in playing.
I think daily updates at least during the week, and some sort of grid-type visuals would be important to properly learn and use the new powers/mechanics. Other than that, I'm open to pretty much any DM style, level of experience, or adventure type.

well, if you like most of us who just want 4e to dry up and blow away like any other tumbleweed around these parts; you could join one of the plethora of 3.5 games. hehe I keep wondering if anyone is going to do a 1e or 2e game; hehe; I know peeps set in thier ways who still won't budge from those games.

I don't mind it very much myself, and I'd rather play it for myself and see how I feel before I just go along with everyone else. But you're right, if I don't have much luck I'll definitely be able to find a 3.5 game. cheers

I own the three core books (and have read through them, mostly) and have been toying around with the idea of running a 4E PBP here on the boards. What sorts of adventures would you all be interested in playing? (I'm not going to DM KotS... I was somewhat disappointed with it. Luckily, DMing a homebrew adventure for my group has been much more fun)

Without rehashing old arguments, I'll just say that I don't share the opinion that 4E is some big bad monster to be avoided at all costs. I still like 3.5 and have no current plans to make a complete switch, but I do want to at least try the new rules. I'm already in a 3.5 game and am looking specifically to try out 4E rather than just to join another game, though I'm sure there are a lot of good ones.

I mainly want to try out the new rules, so any adventure you'd like to run that would showcase a lot of what's new in 4E would be great. My understanding is that KotS is a very basic dungeon crawl that allows players to get used to their powers and the new mechanics, so that sounded good to me. But I'm certainly up for something else.
What I'm looking for:
- daily updates at least during the week
- slight mechanics emphasis (as opposed to mainly role-playing)
- short to medium adventure starting at Level 1 (not really looking for a 20-level campaign here)
- some sort of grid handling for combat, even if it's just everyone drawing the map and having players/DM post movements with coordinates like chess moves
- 4E
Of course, those are just my personal preferences, and, as DM, you should run whatever game you want to see.

The grid is really important. I've been proselytizing Google Spreadsheets for maps for both 3.5 and 4 -- it works pretty well. Examples are linked from my profile.

Yup, I think Google Spreadsheets is a good option. You can also publish the map and share it the PCs or any other fellow google-ites (googlies?) rather than including it as a link in each post. You can also set access depending on whether you want PCs to be able to update the map on their own, though I'm not sure that would work out well.
How long before we get a Google Tabletop?

Pat, without spoiling, what do you think of KotS? Do you agree that it leaves something to be desired, or is it a solid introduction to 4E? I'm thinking about getting it to use IRL.
I'm also interested to know how useful the DMG is, for anyone who has it. With the PHB reorganized as it is, do you really need the DMG to run a game, or is it more of an accessory than a core book? I don't really want to shell out for three handbooks until I've actually tried the game with my group so we can make an informed decision about whether to switch...

Keep on the Shadowfell seems to mostly be an excuse to try out a lot of different mechanics. As many others have noted, the story is pretty thin. If everyone expects a hack-and-slash though, they can be fun. It is a solid intro to the mechanics. However, I canceled my preorder for Thunderspire Labyrinth and sent the money to Wolfgang Baur to sponsor his first 4e OpenDesign project instead.
For your other question, it's more inspiring than useful, in my opinion. It's a bigger and better collection of DM advice than I've seen elsewhere in many, many years of gaming, but it's very rules-light. Poisons, diseases, traps, xp system (most of which you can dope out elsewhere) and revising monsters, I think covers most of the rules.

Hey guys! I'll be checking out Google Spreadsheets for mapping purposes. In the past, I've just used uploaded grid images on which I place marks for each character.
I've gone and made a discussion page for the game here.
EDIT: Oh, and the DMG is extremely useful. Besides the DM advice and world flavor stuff, it has rules on making Skill Challenges, customizing monsters, traps and hazards, making NPCs and original monsters, and a bunch of other good stuff. In fact, I'm pretty sure that some of that alone makes it necessary to run a game. A player has no need for it (or the MM for that matter), however.

Not interested but I thought I would offer a bit of advice....
on the map thing, you can create stuff and upload to many sights including free image hosting sites like Flickr. Here is a link to my account there to see the images I have on the site, Feel free to browse my stuff a bit.
If you notice I, like many others on the PBP boards, use the grid with A-Z+ along one side and 1-20+ on the adjacent side. That way you can denote locations as 'A7' and stuff, like playing chess online or by mail.
On my flickr page is a blank grid already alpha-numbered to use. I believe that Kruelaid made it, so kudos go to him, but feel free to copy the image and use it if you need to. Aubrey is a good person to talk to to get advice on using the Alpha-numeric system to layout a battle. He is almost a master at it.
Good luck with the game and if you have any questions for me, I should be around here somewhere. ;P
