I'm confused about the genealogy of Headmaster Toff Ornelos. In the secrets chapter, it explains that he's quite old, and that he spent a lot of time under the control of Volshyenek, his great uncle. Did Volshyenek bring a sibling with him to Korvosa? If Volshyenek is Toff's great uncle then Toff is his sibling's grandson. This makes Toff hugely old, but that's workable. (If nothing else it could be presumed that there are other "great-"s missing in front of "great-uncle".) Is it really trying to say that Toff is descended from Volshyenek's sibling?
Or is the current lord Toff's great-uncle? This would make that guy pretty stinking old, but it's conceivable. Maybe I'm misreading stuff?

It's highly likely that a nephew or four followed Rich Uncle Volshynek to Korvosa to help him establish himself. Of course, these kids would have done it to get on his good side and become one of his favorites. That probably worked, and is why Toff is favored by Volshynek.

There are some great-greats missing in there, I assume. It's just easier shorthand to say "great uncle" than "great-great-great-great uncle" or whatever. I think that's how genealogy handles that sort of thing, because using all those extra "greats" is... um... grating. (Ha ha!)
Toff is old, but he's not quite THAT old. ;)
