Could someone help me understand how Laori Vaus is LE?

In reading her write-up in Escape from Old Korvosa, I had a really hard time figuring out how a bubbly masochist can be played as LE. The alignment doesn't seem to fit.

In looking at her deity, it occurs to me that CE may actually be a better fit (with an emphasis on chaotic). (She strikes me as a bubbly alter-ego to the CE Phauraun from the Demonweb series.)

I'd love to hear people's thoughts.

My understanding was that she was a sadist not a masochist. Without knowing why you cannot reconcile her outgoing, happy-go-lucky personality with her alignment it is difficult to provide advice.

Perhaps if you just focus upon her goals, and personality traits and worry less about her alignment that would help? Generally speaking she sees the PCs as a tool to further her goal of locating what she seeks. That defines Lawful Evil to me. The fact that she has a bubbly personality is a character trait, and has nothing to do with alignment in my understanding.

Think Manservant Hecubus from Kids in the Hall, only even bouncier and more feminine.

Zon-Kuthon's not gonna allow a chaotic evil worshiper at all, so she can't be that. She probably COULD be lawful neutral, I guess, but I like her better as lawful evil. She's bubbly and happy, sure, but the things she gets bubbly and happy about are pulling out fingernails or knocking out teeth. It's easy to confuse "happy" with "nice." She's definitely NOT very nice. That said, her attitude IS pretty unusual and off-kilter, which pretty much makes her have a hard time getting along well with other folk in her church.

I'm glad someone mentioned Laori, because I had a question about the character as well.

My apologies for jumping off from the direct question, but how the heck do you make form-fitting chainmail like that? (based on the illustration)
I mean, until I read her stats, I thought it was some sort thieves' bodysuit with hooks - not chainmail lycra.

I get the feeling you could play her as a creepy kind of hotness to the PC's as well.

The look of the illo for Laori, while not bad, doesn't really fit with the theme and style of the standard Pathfinder art. It's probably best, as a result, not to think of that picture as a picture of Laori as much as it might be a picture of Laori DRAWN by Laori. It certainly catches her personality and peppiness, but it's not realistic. Therefore, I wouldn't worry too much about how her armor goes on as it appears in that picture. Her armor is really just plain old chain mail covered with hooks... spiked chainmail, in other words.

Always one to jump into an odd discussion on alignment, I can see LE working for either a sadist or a masochist.

Granted I'm working from a real world model where evil doesn't factor in, but in BDSM relationships, it's all about staying within the rules. There are always boundaries set, and trust is a factor. You can't really trust someone that breaks the rules. That seems to call for a lawful element to the alignment.

OK, James - thanks for the insight. So she's not bad...she's just drawn that way...lol

I'm certainly not objecting to the way she was drawn. In fact, I quite enjoy going to that page in the adventure.

Reminds me of a great quote: "I'm not bad. I'm just drawn that way."

I'd agree with this, anyone who sees her bouncing around and her approach to combat might jump straight to assuming a chaotic alignment. But really it's just a veneer, beneath that, she's planning, calculating and using the PCs to do what she needs to do (just look at how careful she is about what she does and doesn't tell them), that's pretty damn lawful. The fact that she happens to have a bubbly attitude and really enjoys what she does (and isn't afraid to tell people about it) doesn't detract from that. If she approached the situation by slaughtering everyone in her path and asking questions later, then she'd totally be chaotic evil.
