Where are all the Pathfinders?

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

Liberty's Edge

So we're almost getting ready to gear up for AP 3 now, and we've had 9 months of modules, and aside from the entry in PF1 and some minor bits here and there we've seen very little of the Pathfinder organization. There should realistically be a whole sourcebook on them (a whole AP too) that is focused on the organization it's the namesake of the RPG!

It'd be like releasing a Dungeons and Dragons game with neither Dungeons nor Dragons.

The Pathfinders aren't as world-spanning and omnipresent as one might think, honestly. In addition, the sort of assumption we have is that the PCs themselves are the "Pathfinders," even if they aren't officially in the organization. They're the ones out there exploring and discovering and moving and shaking.

Alternately: you can look to our organized play stuff as well; that's all about the Pathfinders. It debuts this August at Gen Con.

Let's make the Pathfinders a clandestine organization, like the Millennium Group. You never know who might be a member, and, of course, there's some overarching, grand conspiracy tying everything together...the PCs are pawns.

I like your suggestion - fits well with the description of the leadership of the pathfinders in the Gazeteer as well.

Spoiler:
A shadowy inner circle of masked leaders known as the
Decemvirate rules the Pathfinder Society from the bustling
metropolis of Absalom...

"This is who we are." I loved Millennium, and now I have the sudden urge to model a BBEG after Lucy Butler.

That's absolutely beautiful. Millennium has always been one of my favorite series, so I love this idea. Naturally, the PCs' "sponsor" within the organization would have to be just like Peter Watts, silly mustache and all. XD

"This is who we are" always gives me chills.

Well at the very least, each AP could have a section on the local Venture-Captain and Pathfinder lodge that Pathfinder PCs would send their reports to (this would be good info for the Second Darkness companion)

There is no big secret - we are just a bunch of vigilantees helping out th FBI...

The in-game Pathfinder society reminds me of Kipling's 'Kim'. There were several characters who would send reports to the British Museum, hoping to gain recognition. They were professionally spys or goverment officials or some such, and would die for their cause, but the dream was to be recognized by the museum as contributors.

I picture the adventurers doing a write-up of their discoverys for a scholarly council, hoping to gain the 'Friend of the Pathfinder Society' label to add to their name.

Mike has said that there would be a Pathfinder PrC or full class in the Campaign Setting this summer. Then you can make your own PFs and add them where ever you'd like.

While my group was exploring Magnimar after "The Skinshaw Murders", they put their application in by describing what they found under Sandpoint and Thistletop. While it does not yet meet Pathfinder Society standards for noteworthiness, the society is keeping an eye on them; just in case.

There is now an in-game reason for the players to read the Pathfinder Chronicles.

Liberty's Edge

I started my RotRL campaign with the players each having, for one reason or another come to the Magnimar guild and petitioned for entrance into the Pathfinder Society. It didn't seem like the Magnimar guild kept itself as under wraps as most of them do, and being a fledgling branch it seemed the most likely to allow in more novice members.

That isn't to say that the characters have simply been accepted, instead they were paired and sent to sandpoint to report on the dedication of the church there, something that is a basic enough task the pathfinders wouldn't want to waste real members on but important enough it should be recorded, it also seemed a good way of finding out how detailed and investigative the characters could be.

With all that has happened since then, the players still haven't gained full membership, but they are much more an active part of the society whenever they return to Magnimar, dropping off their reports and checking whether there are any services that need to be fulfilled. Its been a nice touch.

Of course thats before I read the conclusion of module 6 where it mentions that after all that the characters have done, the pathfinders would certainly have an interest in recruiting them. I think the pathfinders in my world have lower standards.

This is a great hook. Since I'll be starting either RotR or CotCT this summer (haven't decided yet), it could theoretically work for either campaign (or any of the future ones too, I imagine). One needn't include all PCs in this either, and let those who want it as their motivation or backstory to be able to use it.

Mike, will Pathfinder be a full class progression or a PrC or is this a secret (like your meeting of last week that we are supposed to hear about sooooon)?

There is one prestige class for the Pathfinder Society in the hardcover, but we will undoubtedly make more later (in much the same way there isn't just one harper prestige class but many).

I prefer to think that they're like The Filth (Grant Morrison).

Music to my ears. The Pathfinder really intrigues me and I'm just itching for more info--be it fluff or crunch.

(Mostly because I have an idea for some original fiction set in Golarian, and I'm thinking of making the main character a Pathfinder)
